Its personality is the musical and lyrical embodiment of the composers themselves, and you can feel and hear the care, emotion and revealing reminiscence running throughout its 46 minutes and 43 seconds.
Interestingly, Elton wrote all the music for the album during a five-day cruise from England to New York aboard the S.S. France, using the ship's piano during the crew's daily afternoon lunch break.
And while grounding the album in reality, he also allowed his words to meander into some of the best-turned and deliciously descriptive phrases he has ever put to paper.

And yet, I truly respect this album, even moreso than The VU and Nico (which I did underrate, though it is somewhat of a drag, still) and Loaded (boring as beans).
It's neither the best album in rock history, nor the worst, but it is probably the most ridiculous, and after it, rock and roll deserved to be euthanized.
The solos on the entire album have no melodic configuration, they are hardly hummable like a Harrison solo and hardly as impressive as, well, insert any guitarist here.

This is the essential debut album and consists only of covers of other popular songs but their versions are so unlike the originals that you just may want to take a listen or a journey.
A great album with all songs being covers but done with such finesse and heaviness that many other bands have drawn from their approach to redefining and defining the sounds and melodies of other artist music as well as their own.

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
In 1962, when Johnny Carson took over the NBC "Tonight Show", he commissioned Anka for a new THEME song, via his company called "Management Agency and Music Publishing, Inc." Anka must have suggested re-using this old tune, which does have a pleasant bouncy feel and does seem to fit.
Along the way, he polished his presentation on game shows ("Who Do You Trust?") and a number of comedic guest shots until the slot opened on NBC late-night.
As block-programming of radio was supplanted by "formats", Carson adapted and was able to combine his love of comedy with the new needs of the medium.
