  Got Rhythm? Wish you did?
According to Reinhard Flatischler, the founder of the musical group process called TaKeTiNa, rhythm is an internal force that exists in the foundations of life (breathing and heartbeat).
The claps are in a different rhythm than the footsteps and so cannot be "found" with the use of the voluntary mind.
As the feet are stepping in one pattern and the hands clapping in another, the leader begins to sing in a call- and- response fashion…first singing in a way to stabilize these two different patterns in the body.

You've Got Rhythm Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Rhythm is at the heart of what musicians do, and rhythmic training is an essential part of a musician's development.
In their new book You've Got Rhythm, Anna Dembska and Joan Harkness have come up with a way of teaching rhythm which not only avoids boredom, but actually makes rhythmic training fun.
Traditional approaches to "counting" rhythm are used sparingly, and only where necessary to clarify the structure or relationship of note patterns to the meter.

 Jazz Standards: I Got Rhythm
Jazz musicians are familiar with the term “rhythm changes,” which is a phrase referring to the chord progressions of “I Got Rhythm.” In the first few decades of the 1900’s, record companies began encouraging musicians to reuse chord progressions of existing popular songs.
Although the “rhythm changes” are usually attributed to Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm,” their exact origin is not known; many of the well-known composers of jazz standards, including Gershwin, mined the early jazz clubs for their material.
Together, their performance on “I Got Rhythm” not only stole the show but made it clear that jazz was changing.

KeepMedia | HealthDay: Baby's Got Rhythm -- Really
The studies found the babies were able to detect subtle variations in the complex rhythm patterns of Balkan folkdance music just as easily as adult Bulgarian and Macedonian immigrants in the United States.
However, "by the time babies are 12 months old, they much more closely resemble adults who are more sensitive to rhythms in their own culture's music than to rhythms in a foreign musical culture," researcher Erin Hannon of Cornell University said in a prepared statement.
She said it's likely that an infant's developmental path for learning musical rhythm is similar to that used in language and speech.

BJ Hoff's GRACE NOTES: Got Rhythm?
I especially get the part about "sitting after half the morning, crammed with ideas and visions, and so on, and can't dislodge them, for lack of the right rhythm." Included with characterization, plotting, description, and a firm command of grammar and usage is this equally significant, almost mystic element of rhythm.
But when it finally works--when you finally hear the rhythm as it's meant to be, as you could hear it in your head all along--then you realize that what you thought to be time wasted was actually time well-spent.
I know what she meant, too, BJ, but when I can't find the rhythm, I just let it all hang out and trust that I'll have a chance to fix it in the next pass.
