I mean, our killer has omnipotant qualities, and always knows how to show up at just the right times, even though he's just a nutty old man that escaped from prison and doesn't seem to have much sense in person.
I felt like I Know used more old school horror and was much more serious while Scream was trying to introduce a new kind of horror movie that had comedy and irony, so of course in comparing Scream comes out the more enjoyable flick.
The story of I know what u did last summer is Helen was participating in a teen beauty pagent and the other three come to cheer her on.

Bless the filmmakers for integrating the cast (and recognizing that African Americans are a loyal audience for genre films), but Brandy's romantic relationship with the perpetually horny Phifer seems more about caricature than character, and she really doesn't have as much to work with as Hewitt and, to a lesser degree, Prinze.

The biggest shock of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is that it was written by Kevin Williamson, the man behind the clever horror parody that was 'Scream.' Characters in that film knew the horror cliches and even spoke of them.
Characters in 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' don't seem to have a brain, and they apparently have never been near a Freddy Krueger movie, but that's okay.
Julie comes home for summer from her college and gets a mysterious note that says, 'I know what you did last summer.' Ingenious, I never thought that the title would be so unoriginal.

As you prob'ly know, Williamson is the slasher typist whose rookie screenplay wound up as a little ditty called Scream.

Of course, whether or not this type of high-tech wrangling is actually going on in small Southern towns is really beside the point, as are some of the film's third act plot points.

The supreme and most surprising feature of I Know What You Did Last Summer is that it actually does keep you guessing as to the identity of its killer, and you actually do invest a small, slight ounce of yourself in hoping that these fresh-faced li'l kids won't take a fish-hook in the gut.
High school is as dead as the man they throw in the water, and you're not sure if the manslaughter they thus conceal is the reason for which these four grow apart or it it's a convenient scapegoat for a gaggle of teenagers who realize they just don't have anything to say to each other.
Certainly no element of the picture makes any strong impression, and if you saw this movie last summer and still know reliably what anyone did in it, yours is a stronger memory than most.

They have won this trip, courtesy of a radio station contest, and check into a seedy hotel where the desk clerk murmurs, "I see four spoiled city kids who would not know a hurricane if it blew up their ass." Which is somewhat relevant since a hurricane's approaching.
On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" is a slasher 3.

And even though the first hour is more mystery than anything, don't be fooled into believing that the last half of the film doesn't contain the many gruesome bloody murders to which we have become accustomed.
The down side was that much like in SCREAM, the murderer did just seem to be around when the main cast was present, and always seemed to disappear (a bit too conveniently at times) when anyone else appeared.
Though Buffy did an ok job, all the rest of the cast was crap (Freddie was just plain bad, sorry girls!).

Footnote: The reason I did not want my review of IKWYDLS to end up in point form was that about six months ago at Jabootu’s, Jason MacIsaac took his hook to both IKWYDLS and ISKWYDLS in just that way.

One particular officer remains skeptical right up until the point where he suddenly is the unhappy recipient of a boat hook in the guts, sending Julie running off shreiking hysterically into the night, something she does well, and does frequently.
The killer himself is uninteresting and unconvincing...brother to the original dead man, he is a fisherman who kills with his sturdy boat hook, and walks around in the summer heat dressed in rain slicker and other foul-weather gear, and nobody seems to notice him.
The film has a few moments of decent suspense here and there before it falls back into the "scream and run around madly" school of plot development, and the ending, which gives HUGE hints of the sequels to follow, is weak and highly unlikely.

By the time, the next summer rolls around, every one is pretty much a wreck.
