Topic: I Love Trouble

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  'I Love Trouble'
I Love Trouble," a facile caper about rival newspaper reporters, is a lot like an Ikea bookcase: It's easily assembled and stylishly utilitarian.
That's not to say that "I Love Trouble" is remotely kinky.
"I Love Trouble" is rated PG for vulgar language and violence.

Excerpt - The trouble with love
You may try to stop it because perhaps you are in love with some horrible creature, or this creature doesn't want to live with you, or this creature is already totally in love with another creature.
Because even if you think that you get the creature you love, you find out it is not that at all; love is not a creature.
Then we can be in love: without knowing each other's name, without having to set up any kind of future understanding of what our relationship is, without having a relationship.

Of course, "I Love Trouble" is also mediocre, so maybe it's just the choices she makes.
In truth, just about everything there is to like in "I Love Trouble" comes from Roberts, who plays Sabrina Peterson, an overconfident rookie reporter at a we're-No. 2-so-we-try-harder newspaper in Chicago.
"I Love Trouble" obviously wants to be a modern equivalent of the "Thin Man" movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy, along with "Woman of the Year" (Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn) and "His Girl Friday" (Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell).

I Love Trouble is a perfect example of a truly lightweight motion picture.
Julia Roberts generally does her best work in lighter roles (even though it has elements of a thriller/mystery, I Love Trouble is, at heart, a romantic comedy), and her Peterson proves to be an apt foil for Brackett.
The sad truth is that whenever I Love Trouble relies on something other than its two stars, it's in trouble.

Toward the end of "I Love Trouble," Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts kiss each other, and the movie cuts to a reaction shot of her cute little dog.
In "I Love Trouble," if you must know, the mystery involves a secret cow hormone that not only produces more milk, but also causes cancer among those who drink it.
What is important is that the search for the secret causes Nolte and Roberts to trick and double-cross each other until the action climax where they are literally hanging on by their fingernails, while bad guys shoot at them and they are still trying to scoop one another.

 Salon Books | "Love Trouble"
Published almost two years after the death of its author (at 56, of a brain tumor), the book is a chronicle of sorts of Geng's life, a self-portrait of one of the best-regarded humorists of the past few decades.
Reading his preamble, infused as it is with unabashed love and admiration, makes you want to give Geng's take on politics, the media and pulp fiction more than the passing glance magazine columns usually get.
One can't help but think that "Love Trouble" is exactly the memorial the author would have wanted.

 I Love Trouble review (1994) - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
From then on, Brackett becomes infused with a feeling of healthy competition to stay ahead of Sabrina, and eventually, the two being to gather vital information that the other does not, forcing an uneasy alliance that is fraught with tension, sexual and otherwise.
I Love Trouble is an earnest attempt at an old-fashioned comedy, sparking up a romance amid a battle-of-the-sexes scenario, very similar to the screwball comedies you'd find in the 30s and 40s.
The film is at its best when it is in the frothy romance mode, and had it stayed there for most of the running time, this might have been a modestly successful venture.

I mean now, not 11 years ago when I Love Trouble came out and obviously failed to do so.
The problem with I Love Trouble is that the writers Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (who also directed) have made a perfectly serviceable film that doesn’t even come close enough to nailing the dialogue, wit, or sophistication of its inspirations.
I Love Trouble is a harmless enough time-waster, and that’s about all.

 I Love Trouble (1994)
I Love Trouble is a lightweight romantic comedy of helium-filled proportions.
It is effectively a vehicle for everyone's favourite movie darling of the early 1990s, Julia Roberts, to have some fun and look lovely while getting one up on the dastardly male lead played by Nick Nolte.
This is of course until journalistic competition, in the form of the lovely Sabrina Peterson (Julia Roberts), comes along with her quick wit, sharpened pencil, keen nose for a story, and obligatory short skirt.

Film Review - I Love Trouble
And now comes I Love Trouble, a pleasant enough, if totally undistinguished, confection of classic newspaper films of the l930s and l940s (specifically, His Girl Friday, l940), with a touch of George Cukor's Adam's Rib (l949) and Pat and Mike (l952), both starring the ever-sparring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn.
All along, they continue to insist that their collaboration is strictly professional and that they are not sexually attracted to each other.
I Love Trouble tries to combine two different genres--romantic comedy and paranoid thriller--but only the former is somewhat engaging and neither is very convincing.

At more than two hours, I Love Trouble begins to dismantle itself, and the cute factor becomes a pain.
I Love Trouble is a sugary ode to Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday from the writer-producer-director team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride), who can't lift this to a believable--let alone enjoyable--plateau.
Roberts plays Sabrina, a club-reporter whose resourcefulness and quick wit are matched only by her competitive spirit, which spells trouble for her seasoned columnist-turned-novalist Peter (Nolte).

"I Love Trouble" wants to be a "His Girl Friday" for the '90s: a fast-paced comedy featuring romance and snappy repartee.
But the dialogue is dreary; the confusing plot is more mystery than comedy; and the romance is less than sizzling.
As it is, this confused comedy is more trouble than it's worth.

I Love Trouble is the story of hot shot newspaper columnist and author, Peter Bracket, who gets roped into covering a train crash story for his paper, the Chicago Chronicle.
Also covering the derailment story is a female rookie reporter, Rachel Peterson, who is working for a rival paper, the Chicago Globe.
In one scene when Peter and Rachel are searching the home of a suspect, they come across a bird in a cage and Rachel reaches in to give the bird some water.

Don't be put off by the frisky title: I Love Trouble isn't one of those dismal crime-cum-comedy hybrids so inexplicably popular in the '40s (true, a bantering element tries to creep in from time to time but it's held mercifully at bay; one routine, however, starring a hash-slinger named Miss Phipps, deserves to be bronzed).
More specifically, I Love Trouble follows the footsteps tramped out by Murder, My Sweet and The Lady in the Lake, and follows them doggedly.

I Love Trouble Trailer, Reviews and Schedule for I Love Trouble | TVGuide.com
I LOVE TROUBLE is a bumpy, uneven reprise of the old-fashioned Hollywood newspaper comedy.
Although Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte are a surprisingly winning team, the filmmakers don't approach their material with the kind of hip revisionism that sometimes enlivens genre revivals, settling instead for an awkward retread of much superior models.
