Reason Magazine - The Search for the Historical Reagan
During the '80s, women quietly came closer to economic parity with men; meanwhile, homosexuals had so little to fear from Washington that Reagan-hating gay activists, unable to find examples of the president actually cracking down on their community, were reduced to complaining about how long it took the man to say the word "AIDS."
Looking back on his presidency, it's clear that he didn't deserve the Ronnie Raygun caricature he was tarred with.
When Reagan said he wanted to end both communist tyranny and the threat of nuclear holocaust, he was perfectly serious, a truth missed by those, on the left and the right, who thought you could target one or the other but never both.

Arguably, I Love The '80s and I Love The '80s: Strikes Back were more nostalgic and wittier than the I Love The '90s series.
In 2003, when the I Love The '80s series premiered, people had at least 15 years to forget all of the little aspects of life in the '80s and were happily reminded of them on the show.
That is exactly why I Love The '90s: Part Deux appeals to the younger generation because they can easily remember the events and the pop culture highlights from that decade.

The WELL: Craig Seligman: "Sontag & Kael"
Not that I don't still love movies, but we understood what Sontag was saying when she called film "*the* art form of the twentienth century." I don't think she'd be so likely to call it *the* art form of the present century.
Certainly the movies of the '80s were a disappointment after the excitement of the '60s and the '70s, and "dispirited" is probably a fair way to describe one aspect of Kael's work during that period.
That she became less of one in the '80s (though of course we can point to reviews that are exceptions) had more, I think, to do with a change in films than with a change in her.

These pop-culture tidbits are presented as happy nostalgia, and embedded in them are the politics of the age, the always implicit notion that somehow yesterday -- in this case, the '80s -- was better.

Various Artists: Heart of Metal 2 - PopMatters Music Review
How it was that, for the greater part of a decade, men with long hair, makeup and butt-less pants could sing heart-wrenching love songs while epitomizing masculinity may never be explained, and maybe never should -- and for some of us, signals that there may be hope yet.
All that aside, the dire need to revel in it all is what strikes to the core of Heart of Metal 2, a 12-song collection paying homage to this most peculiar of phenomena.
But with '80s revivalism in full force, it is only a matter of time until someone puts together the perfect song-set to narrate your nostalgia.

The new show took away all the glory and wonder that was “I Love the 80s.” The 80s actually needed at least 10 hours to define them.
