The group was preparing for a concert in Sacramento the night of the bombing, when Windha heard the news of the terrorist attack in his homeland.
Windha's response was to write this piece, which premiered at a benefit concert a few weeks later.
Windha says the piece is gentle and meditative rather than mournful, because the Balinese people chose to respond to the bombings with a period of national introspection and reflection.

I Nyoman Windha is among contemporary Indonesian composers that have written compositions using western instruments along with Gamelan.
Experimental pop group Xiu Xiu uses Gamelan percussion in many songs.

Dalang (Puppeteer) I Nyoman Catra presented a classic tale of Balinese mythology using the shadows of finely detailed puppets on June 9, 2002.

The effect of hearing this elemental and raw sound-world is particularly striking, similar to that of watching an old silent-film accompanied by a player-piano (not Nancarrow’s!) and then stepping into a Sony theater with Dolby and THX stereo-surround sound.
In Nyoman Windha’s “Kindama” the speakers became personalities of their own — the right producing deep throbbing whole-note-like bass notes which supported the repeated chiming flurries from the left speaker.
Its activity is intensified by Windha’s instrumentation, namely instruments that contain an underlying five-note mode but which allow other scales to be played through two additional keys.

I Gusti Nyoman Lempad was invited here by the raja in 1898 and commissioned to build a water palace, ponds, and a garden to be dedicated to Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of art and learning.
The owner, Nyoman Sujana, is a high school teacher and producer of a weekly dance show at the Puri Dalem—he speaks excellent English.
Pak Windha was the founder of the group along with Agung Anom, the renowned baris dancer.

For their Oct. 9 concert at a private amphitheater in Kensington, a fundraising gala for the group, the 50-member troupe of dancers and musicians has invited ten of Bali’s most brilliant musicians and dancers, the largest group of guest artists ever to appear with the ensemble on a single program.
The lineup will include the group’s three current guest artistic directors: I Nyoman Windha, considered by many to be Bali’s leading composer, I Gusti Agung Ayu Warsiki, an expert in the classical legong dance, and multi-instrumentalist and composer I Made Terip who is currently in residence at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum.
Balinese dancer-musician I Nyoman Wenten, who performed in the group’s very first concert and now chairs the World Music Program at the California Institute for the Arts, will also be returning for this program.
