  Vancouver Opera - I puritani
Misunderstandings and political fervour threaten both their bonds and Elvira’s sanity, but when the wars finally end, the truth is told, enemies are pardoned, and the lovers are united.
An undisputed masterpiece of melody, harmonies and orchestration, from one of the great figures of Italian Romantic opera, I puritani is a superb showcase for coloratura singing.
Vancouver Opera is delighted to welcome back one of today’s leading bel canto performers, the electrifying soprano Elizabeth Futral, star of 2002’s Daughter of the Regiment and 2000’s Lucia di Lammermoor – a role she has since performed, to lavish praise, at The Metropolitan Opera.

During the first intermission to OCP's Oct. 6 performance of I Puritani, Bellini's 1835 bel canto masterpiece, the talk was about the famous mad scene.
The conversation suggested several things — mainly, that Philadelphia audiences are unfamiliar with this opera, which was last performed here in 1972, and more significantly, that Bellini was an opera composer of rare subtlety and elegance, whose pen would produce a depiction of mental turmoil that is rich and introspective, rather than histrionic.
I Puritani (The Puritans) takes place in England at the time of Oliver Cromwell and his war against the Stuarts.

The Chelsea Opera Group's 'I Puritani', reviewed by Robert Hugill
But such are the vagaries of London operatic life, that it was the Chelsea Opera Group, an organisation whose chorus and orchestra are purely voluntary, who presented the opera in a concert performance conducted by Dominic Wheeler at Cadogan Hall on Saturday 10 June 2006.
Cadogan Hall is perhaps slightly small for this size of ensemble and, coupled with its rather generous acoustic, this meant the performance was characterised by a generous volume of sound.

I Puritani is Bellini’s last opera to which he dedicated a lot of time and attention.
Reputed to be one of the best operas composed by the 32 years old Sicilian master, I Puritani is a masterpiece of musical inventions and unsurpassed lyrical effusions such as the stupendous and emotional mad scene.
I Puritani’s style and technique are intrinsic of early Romanticism’s vocality, a taste for modulated recitation, composed and emotional bravura, “Non parlar di lei che adoro” as Arturo promises Henrietta to save her.

Her mad scene (a kind of music for which Callas developed a formidable technique) is the opera's musical and dramatic climax, but by no means the only reason for getting to know it.
Both stories are rather silly, but in I PURITANI we only have to smirk while the leading lady goes through two mad scenes rather than try to put away our dramatic disbelief during the story of a Druid priestess and her infidelity and ultimate self-immolation.
When it comes to I puritani there are in my opinion only two options: This brilliant recording whith Callas and de Stefano or the equaly brilliant recording whith Sutherland and Pavarotti.

The Tosca performance is legendary, the Puritani an example of Callas in her prime singing Bellini, vocally a bit flawed, but interpretively unmatched.
