  Internationalization | groups.drupal.org
I know a lot of people new to i18n are coming to this group to see the latest on the module and would like to know more about what is happening right now with drupal 5.x, so I will try to post more often here with user end perspectives.
Development Seed already sponsored the i18n module efforts by Jose and they offered support for the Drupal 6 core i18n movement at the DrupalCamp/GovCamp meetings in September, so they were a natural supporter.
Clearly the i18n module comes into mind, but if you start to look deeper, you will see more approaches tried in the past and in progress, some of which might have very good ideas to carry on.

Description of the i18n transformer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This approach for internationalization (further - i18n) of XML documents within Cocoon is based on a transformer - I18nTransformer, which uses XML dictionaries for all the multilingual data.
Special tags in i18n namespace are used to mark parts of XML document that should be substituted with dictionary messages.
At runtime, the i18n transformer will find a message catalogue for the user's locale, and will appropriately replace the text between the markup, using either the value between the tags as the lookup key or the value of the key attribute if specified.

i18n is short for internationalization, "make software work with many languages".
This package contains support routines and utilities for i18n work, mainly for conversion between 16-bit Unicode strings (where each character can be between \u0000 and \uFFFF) and 7-bit ASCII strings (where the range is limited to \x00..\x7F).
What is needed for i18n is internationalization of the lsort -dictionary command.

I think the extra slash had something to do with the fact that the i18n module is not picking up the list of languages that are installed with locale.module or something like that.
I noticed that when you disable the new i18n module you naturally get "pagenotfound" errors because the current page was rendered with the longer urls (/es/...).
I just tested it: when I18n is enabled and browser language is disabled, the default language is determined by whe $i18n_languages variable, which is one of the things you define when installing the new i18n.

Internationalization is often abbreviated as I18N (or i18n or I18n), by IBM and others, where the number 18 refers to the number of letters omitted.
(The most common forms are i18n and L10n, respectively.
These forms won out because many fonts do not readily distinguish uppercase "I" and lowercase "l", but lowercase "i" and uppercase "L" are always clear.) Both notions are sometimes collectively termed globalization (g11n), but that word has a more common meaning.

We made it clear in the March 15th article that internationalization was not required to define globalization; it was simply required to make the globalization process more efficient by facilitating localization.
