Intel 80386 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Designed and manufactured by Intel, the i386 processor was taped-out in October of 1985.
Because of the high degree of compatibility, the range of processors compatible with the 80386 is often collectively termed the i386 architecture; the instruction set for the architecture is now known as IA-32 or, informally, i386.
Single-sourcing the i386 allowed Intel greater control over its development and substantially greater profits in later years.

ESO. Lesson 2. Introduction to the i386 architecture
The i386 was the first 32 bits processor from Intel.
The i386 is also the first processor to use paging, with a fixed 4KB page size.
The previous processors used a segmentation scheme that can be obviated in the i386 using a flat memory model.

The i386 application binary interface specifies the size to be 96 bits, so -m96bit-long-double is the default in 32 bit mode.

Setup Prompts You for the Windows XP SP1 CD or I386 Folder When You Try to Add a Windows Component
If the contents of Xpsp1.exe are extracted to a folder other than a folder named I386 when the distribution folder was initially created, you experience the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
To avoid this problem, extract the contents of the Xpsp1.exe file to a shared distribution folder named I386, to which users can connect and install the service pack.
In a shared folder, create an I386 folder from which to distribute the service pack.

Change Default Location of the i386 Folder
You can also do the trick with Windows 2000 and XP Professional client computers that were installed from a shared folder on your network, but do not copy the i386 folder to the local drive of each computer.
Extract the SP from the command prompt to a folder on your hard drive using the w2ksp# -x switch, make the path in the registry where you put the files, and you won't have to go fishing for service pack disks again.
The script (written by Bill James) will let you change the default path where XP looks for the I386 folder from the original location on the CD to the new destination folder.

 i386, 586, 686? The difference? - LinuxQuestions.org
In this case i386 is just referring to the generic arcitechture of the target platform.
You want the i386 for anything from a '386 right up to P4, including Athlon, Smeleron and varieties. If you're running PPC, ia64, sparc, or other arch's then you're in for an interesting venture.
Just for clarity: You can use packages etc that are equal or lower than your arch ie: i586 and i386, however you could not use i686 packages, as they have been optomized for a faster/newer processor.

To get a better understanding of how Windows 2000 manages its main memory, it is important to be at least basically familiar with some architectural issues of the i386 CPU.
The term i386 might look somewhat anachronistic because the 80386 CPU dates back to the Stone Age of Windows computing.
Because many data items inside the i386 CPU are concatenations of single bits or bit groups, C bit-fields come in handy.
