Message from server: platform i586-pc-linux-gnu not found
The choices for cpu-type are i386, i486, i586, i686, pentium, pentium-mmx, pentiumpro, pentium2, pentium3, pentium4, k6, k6-2, k6-3, athlon, athlon-tbird, athlon-4, athlon-xp, athlon-mp, winchip-c6, winchip2 and c3.
i586 is equivalent to pentium and i686 is equivalent to pentiumpro.
Yep, so the original question actually remains unanswered as to wether -mcpu=i586 might work, but I figure it probably wouldn't since the message from the server seems to be that it rejects clients that call themselves 'i586-pc-linux-gnu'.

Pentium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pentium was expected to be named 80586 or i586, to follow the naming convention of previous generations.
However, Intel was unable to convince a court to allow them to trademark a number (such as 486), in order to prevent competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices from branding their processors with similar names (such as AMD's Am486).
For these cases, i586 is is a common, though spurious, way to refer to the early Pentium processors, as well as processors made by Intel's competitors that can run machine code targeted to the early Pentiums.

0000943: Update 1: Missing i586 version of glibc - CentOS Bug Tracker   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Basically, i586 users could (for now) update glibc by hand using i386 packages, and then run "yum update" to update the rest of the system.
It is included because we built and included an i586 kernel, an i586 sshd and an i586 glibc.
It would seem the best thing to do is to use the i386 glibc since future RH rpms are also likely not to build for i586 and the nptl is going to continue to be provided in the i386 glibc on RHEL-4.

 Cross-compiling Windows applications on Linux
You can find out what they should be by typing:../config-guess You can change the i586 in i586-pc-mingw32 with something more appropriate for your needs if you want.
The i586 says that the cross-compiler will default to code for a Pentium, unless told otherwise by -m options.
I don't believe that thread support has been implemented yet for MS, although I also don't believe that it is used for anything but Objective-C. I don't know for sure whether the --with directory options are absolutely required.

 i586 and i386 ? - LinuxQuestions.org
Actually i386 is for all 386 class machines while i586 is for pentium class machines and better...
The important thing is that i386 will run on all x86 processors and i586 will only run on pentium class or better (include most amd as well)...
The i586 (Pentium) was the first chip where all of its revisions had a math coprocessor.

Syllable - i586 dependency   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
I ask this because obviously with this dependency Syllable is unable to run on chips that lack i586 instructions, such as 486s and older Pentium clones.
For example, only activating utilisation of i486, i586, i686 & x86-64 instruction extentions when a CPU capable of supporting them is detected.
We'll soon be setting the default compiler target to be i586 anyway, as the Syllable kernel cannot even run on anything less than Pentium so compiling for i386 is a complete waste.

 debian-i586 -- Debian GNU/Linux i586 project   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
debian-i586 is a project to create/produce a tuned/optimized Debian GNU/Linux distribution for i586 (Pentium class) processors or higher, just like Linux-Mandrake does.
To minimize confusion, we will want to specify a new architecture for our packages: i586.
The rest of the upload process should run as expected, ultimately resulting in the packages being stored under binary-i586 instead of binary-i386.
