I686 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The initial letter is capitalized due to technical restrictions.
i686 is the name given to the similar instruction sets used by several Intel and Intel-compatible microprocessors.
It is not an official Intel name but a shorthand derived from the processors being 2 generations on from Intel's i486 instruction set, which was the last to use that nomenclature officially.

 How Linux platforms are switched, i386 to i686 ? | tuxmachines.org
Since the console is the operating system, the entire operating system is restricted to i686 ascii codes.
So, the compiling to i686 platform has to examine the real cpu you are using, with the underpining instructions you need for maximum speed.
To set speed, up to i686, all the applcations had to be using ascii codes with i686 instructions.

What is i686? - Topic Powered by eve community
I originally thought that there would be compiling options, or separate packages for, the Pentium 4 (Willimette, Northwood, Prescott,...) because they use the "NetBurst" architecture instead of the "P6" architecture (which the Pentium Pro, II, III are based).
But no, when compiling, one uses the i686 flag, or one downloads packages compiled for i686, for Pentium 4 systems.
Basically, they are optimized for that specific architecture, and i686 kernels use instructions that don't exist on many "i586" or "i386" processors (Athlon/K7 kernels, for example, will certainly fail to boot on anything else, as they use some 3DNow instructions for things like block move, IIRC.)

[autoupdate] forcing i386 vice i686 for updates
This is the case where I am running on a VIA Centaur mini-ITX.
It thinks its a 686, but the upgrade fails out with: RPM Output: package glibc-2.3.2-4.80.6 is intended for a i686 architecture package openssl-0.9.6b-33 is intended for a i686 architecture Other references on the web suggest using i386 packages for this architecture.
I know about the BestMatch option, but that seems to be related to download behavior, not install behavior.

Most likely, if they are tagging something i586 or i686 it means they used compiler flags (march=i686 -mmmx -msse or the likes) that will cause the binary not to work on an earlier processor.
If it is tagged i386 then it should work on any x86 processor that can run linux.
