 | | I originally thought that there would be compiling options, or separate packages for, the Pentium 4 (Willimette, Northwood, Prescott,...) because they use the "NetBurst" architecture instead of the "P6" architecture (which the Pentium Pro, II, III are based). |
 | | But no, when compiling, one uses the i686 flag, or one downloads packages compiled for i686, for Pentium 4 systems. |
 | | Basically, they are optimized for that specific architecture, and i686 kernels use instructions that don't exist on many "i586" or "i386" processors (Athlon/K7 kernels, for example, will certainly fail to boot on anything else, as they use some 3DNow instructions for things like block move, IIRC.) |
