The 8th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held at the Atlantic Pavilion in Lisbon,Portugal between March 9 and March 11, 2001.
The 8th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at the Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between August 3 and August 12 and was the first time the event had visited North America.

The World Championships in Athletics is an event organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
Following bids from both Stuttgart, Germany and Helsinki, Finland, the IAAF Council awarded the inaugral competition to Helsinki, to take place in 1983 and be held in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (where the 1952 Summer Olympics were held).
Prior to the inaugral IAAF World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 there had been several single events and races in the years leading up to them which were considered World Championships in those events.

The International Association of Athletics Federations World Indoor Championships were inaugurated as the World Indoor Games in 1985 in Paris, France and were subsequently renamed in 1987 as they are known today.

In their short history the championships have seen Mozambique's Maria Mutola claim an incredible 6 gold medals in the women's 800 m from 1993 to 2004, her only defeat coming at the hands of Ludmila Formanová of the Czech Republic in 1999 in a championship record of 1 minute 56.9 seconds that still stands.

The IAAF World Championships in Athletics began in 1983 in Helsinki and were originally held every four years, however, after Tokyo 1991 this changed to every two years.
When the championships returned to Helsinki in 2005, Craig Mottram become the first non-African in 15 years to win a distance medal, taking bronze in the 5000m and announcing himself to the world as a challenger to the African dominance of distance running.

Incidentally, the World Championships began as a quadrennial affair in Helsinki in 1983, where the greatest talent of them all, Carl Fitzgerald Lewis, was born.
That would mean three consecutive World Championships without a medal, after empty shows in Edmonton in Canada in 2001 and at the Paris 2003 championships.
