The International Amateur Athletic Federation was founded in 1912 by 17 national athletic federations who saw the need for a governing authority, for an athletic programme, for standardised technical equipment and world records.
In 1968, a representative of each area in the world was elected to the IAAF Council and in 1995 two women were elected for the first time.

Many of the world’s best athletes have announced their intention to compete at the 9th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics at Birmingham’s NIA from 14th to 16th March.
At the 1997 World Indoor Championships in Japan, O’Sullivan was narrowly beaten into second place by her arch rival, Romanian Gabriela Szabo.
The 9th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics will be preceded by the Norwich Union Grand prix on February 21st and the World Indoor Trials and AAAs Championships on March 1st and 2nd.

The 7th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics were held in Maebashi, Japan between March 5 and March 7, 1999.
It was the first time the Championships was held outside Europe or North America.
Primo Nebiolo, president of the IAAF, characterized the championships as "the greatest ever".

 USATF - Events - 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics
For the Combined Events, eight athletes will be invited by the IAAF: the top 4 athletes in the 2006 Indoor Lists (as of February 20, 2006) and the top 4 athletes in the 2005 Outdoor Lists.
All performances must be achieved in competitions organized or authorized by the IAAF, its Area Associations, or its National Member Federations.
Thus, results achieved at collegiate or school competitions must be certified by the National Federation of the country in which the competition was organized.
