  MIT Mystery Hunt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MIT Mystery Hunt is a puzzlehunt competition held each January at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In 2006, the hunt organizers introduced the concept of an "antepuzzle" as a different mechanism for controlling access to new rounds; in these, the answer is derived from pieces of information attached to the round puzzles, but otherwise irrelevant to them (for example, the colors in which the puzzle titles were printed).
The 2000 hunt included the first Duck Konundrum [1], a complicated and ridiculous set of rules involving a group of people (and a duck) that had to be followed to discover the solution.

They were participating in the twentieth annual IAP Mystery Hunt which began Friday afternoon with about 20 teams competing to solve a complicated puzzle designed by fellow students.
Thus, it was up to the Mystery Hunt participants to solve puzzles revealing usernames and passwords which could be used in a computer able to scan the campus for the coin.
The longest hunt to date was that based on Clue, a hunt which stretched 60 hours, ending at 4 a.m.

I don't even much remember what I did except for hang around the library for four hours for work (I punted writing my lab's paper outrageously, which is why I'm paying for it now, I suppose), and go to a long housemeeting, and then play a couple of games of Smashies Melee.
Mystery Hunt is one of the reasons I come back for IAP (besides being sick of my parents), and it is thoroughly one large, enjoyable group frustration activity.
So nice when you get to end game and run around the campus trying to find "the coin." Mystery Hunt is just plain awesome, and I really wish I could share it with my friends who aren't here.

I’m slightly saddened to say that yesterday saw the end of the MIT Independent Activities Period (IAP) Mystery Hunt.
This fabled hunt “challenges each team to solve a large number of puzzles which lead to a coin hidden somewhere on-campus.” Bill, Scott, Phil, and I participated in the Microsoft Puzzle Challenge late last year, but the IAP Hunt blew that competition clear out of the water.
I was originally not signed up to participate in the hunt, which began on Friday.

Over IAP I worked at Effective Educational Technologies (EET), or as I tell MIT people, the place that makes Mastering Physics.
I also participated in Mystery Hunt, which is an event that happens every IAP where teams basically work together to solve incredibly difficult puzzles in order to find a coin and win.
I was slightly disappointed though because usually the hunt lasts for about 3 days, but this year the winning team found the coin in 36 hours.
