The airfields of the IAR 80 units were considerably to the rear at Morozovskaya and Tatzinskaya and were more concerned with the flood of aircraft that arrived since they were now the closest airfields to the newly formed pocket than any Soviet threat.
The IAR 80 was a Romanian World War II fighter aircraft, one of the few fighters from a "smaller player" in the conflict that proved to be as good as the enemy planes it faced.
IAR realized that the Mistral Major was at the limits of its development potential even by the middle of 1941, when the 1000A model reached the same ultimate output as the original Gnome-Rhône versions.

The I.A.R. 80 shared the PZL P.24es tail, rear fuselage and engine design, the rest was all-new.
Work began on the I.A.R. 80 in late 1937, the open cockpit prototype was fitted with the 940 hp.
A number of I.A.R. 80s were scrambled against the well-publicized USAAF mission to bomb the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania on 1 August 1943.

Citing the inferiority of the I.A.R.80 against the P-51 Mustang, the I.A.R. 80 units were withdrawn from the defense of Bucharest on July 5, 1944 and sent to Moldavia to oppose the invading Soviets.
The I.A.R. 80 is representative of the early period of eastern European limited run injection-molded kits, with nice surface detail and thick parts, with "some modeling ability required" to create a model.
The I.A.R. 80 is not the most beautiful fighter of the Second World War, but it is a historically-significant airplane, and worthy of inclusion in representative collection of fighters from the Second World War.

Perhaps the finest combat aircraft developed by these nations was the IAR 80, an indigenous Romanian design that itself drew on the design of the Polish PZL P-24, which Romania license-built before the start of the war.
A team of IAR engineers led by Dr. Ion Grosu studied the Polish aircraft and used its best features, but abandoned the parasol gull wing of the Polish fighter in favor of a thin, tapered low wing, added retractable landing gear, and closely cowled the engine.
Although the IAR 80 wore one basic scheme - dark green and tan over light blue, with yellow cowlings and fuselage bandsóthe decals are spectacular.

In order to rectify the situation, the government nationalized IAR in 1935 and made it the primary supplier of warplanes while SET and ICAR were left to compete for limited government and civilian contracts.
IAR was chosen to supply the Romanian armed forces with warplanes because it had already demonstrated its ability and desire to build fighter aircraft.
The IAR engineers were dismayed at losing the contract but realized that the Polish design had many advantages over their own.

Until recently, there was little information on the IAR fighter, but with articles appearing in many enthusiast magazines as well as a nice 'in-action' style booklet published in central Europe, more is known about this fine little aircraft.

In an hour-long battle, 36 of 130 B-24s were shot down-10 by Romanian Bf 109Gs and IAR 80 fighters, seven by the Luftwaffe and the remainder by flak.
The IAR 80-the only domestically designed Romanian fighter to see service during the War-was obsolete compared with the P-51 Mustangs and P-38 Lightnings flown by their U.S. opponents.
The cannon-armed IAR 81C was, however, particularly effective against the bombers, and in the eight raids flown against Ploesti between April 5 and June 6, 1944, the bombers averaged an unacceptably heavy seven-percent loss rate.

In May 1941, IAR experimented with an IAR-80 fighter fitted with dive brakes and a large bomb cradle slung low under the aircraft.
The SM-79 was a fine torpedo plane in Italian hands and an adequate medium bomber; for close-support it proved very vulnerable to ground fire and the FARR lost two of them on their very first sortie.

My poor IAR had no chance of keeping up in a zoom climb (although I tried--foolish), my wingman got dusted, and I had to split-ess to the deck rolling like a madman in order to avoid a similar fate.
Which brings me to damage modeling: Romanian pilots reported that fires on board an IAR were especially dangerous for the jockey because the main tank was right in front of the cockpit.
German pilots reported IAR's performance to be in the same area as Bf109 E except dive.

Although the IAR 80 and 80A were eventually withdrawn from service on the Russian front, they continued to serve in Romania, protecting vital oil fields and ports from both Russian and American attack.
