IAX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IAX is the Inter-Asterisk eXchange protocol used by Asterisk, an open source PBX server from Digium.
The primary goals for IAX were to minimize bandwidth used in media transmissions, with particular attention drawn to control and individual voice calls, and to provide native support for NAT (Network Address Translation) transparency.
IAX is a binary protocol, designed to reduce overhead especially in regards to voice streams.

IAX does not specify a retransmit timeout; this is left to the implementor.
The trunk header is an IAX meta command header specifying that the frame is an IAX trunk, followed by a 32-bit timestamp specifying the time of transmission of the trunk frame.
IAX permits transmitting the timestamps of each encapsulated mini frame as well, so that accurate timing information can be used for jitterbuffers, etc. A flag in the meta command header specifies whether the encapsulated mini frames retain their original timestamps.

 What is IAX?
IAX was designed to replace the earlier call control protocols, H.323 and SIP.
IAX is much more bandwidth efficient than the competing VoIP call control protocols, enabling it to support more concurrent VoIP calls over the same amount of bandwidth.
IAX was developed for the Asterisk PBX and originally stood for Inter-Asterisk eXchange.

The IAX revision 2 protocol is used by the Asterisk VOIP PBX and FreeSwitch Softswitch as an alternative to SIP, H.323, etc. when connecting to other devices that support IAX (a limited list at the moment, but growing very rapidly).
IAX uses a single UDP port 4569, and thus works well in NAT environments (the obsolete IAX1 protocol used port 5036).
IAX trunking allows multiple voice streams to share a single "trunk" to another server, reducing overhead created by IP packets.

Furthermore, even though IAX is open source, it has close ties to a single hardware vendor, Digium.

GigaOM » IAX versus SIP, which is better?
IAX handles Network Address Translation at the protocol layer so it’s much easier to configure on residential connections (SIP requires using STUN, keepalives, or some other workaround not built into the protocol).
IAX is well suited for trunks carrying many simultaneous calls because it multiplexes the signaling for all these separate calls into one stream.  The result is that the bandwidth required is reduced significantly.
IAX is the native protocol of Asterisk, so it’s very easy for people who want to use this free, open-source PBX software to use it.
