According to IBGE technicians, migrations to the Central-West in the last few decades were motivated by the opening up of new agricultural areas in states such as Mato Grosso and Goiás.
IBGE has noticed that the rural exodus has diminished and the coastal population has increased—the urban growth in Rio has been 1.39 percent.
Technicians of the IBGE say that for the population to remain stable, each family should have the equivalent of 2.1 children.

IBGE figures for open unemployment are misleadingly low because they do not capture the endemic underemployment and the rising number of discouraged workers in Brazil.
According to the IBGE, the share of unregistered workers in the Brazilian economy grew from 42 percent in 1989 to nearly 58 percent a decade later, as more than 11 million jobs arose in the informal sector and 4.3 million formal sector jobs were eliminated.
The IBGE indicates that the average wage in the industrialized Southeast is roughly twice the amount earned by most workers in the impoverished Northeast.

 Alfabetização Solidária - Resultados
With the announcement of the definitive data of Census 2000, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) confirmed that, although recent, the Solidarity in Literacy effectively contributed to decreasing the illiteracy index in the country during the last decade.
According to IBGE, there was a decrease of 32.3% in the national illiteracy index in the group composed of youths and adults with ages 15 and older.
The Solidarity in Literacy work started with a pilot-project in 1997, in the 38 counties that, as per the IBGE Census of 1991, registered the highest indices of illiteracy in the between ages 15 to 19.

Meanwhile, many other data indicators from the IBGE were pointing to a deceleration of economic activity throughout the third quarter.
Even if the IBGE revises these numbers downward, the Brazilian economy now seems to be heading for a recovery this year (again, according to the IBGE), after remaining in recession during the last quarter of 2001 and the first quarter of this year.

The Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said it fell to 9.6% in December from 10.6% in November and 10.9% in December 2003.
IBGE also said that average monthly salaries grew 1.9% in December 2004 from December 2003.
The jobless rate average for the whole of 2004 was 11.5%, down from 12.3% in 2003, the IBGE said.
