Topic: IBM 029

Key punch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Introduced with System 360, the 029 had new character codes for parentheses, equal and plus as well as other new symbols used in the EBCDIC code.
The IBM 029 printed on the top of the card the punched character using the same kind of mechanism as the IBM 026.
When using the 029 keypunch a keystroke error required the record to be ejected and manually removed from the output card stream.

The character was printed using a 5x7 dot matrix array of wires; the ROM from which it derived the shape of the character was actually a metal plate with hundreds of strategically placed pins.
The '029 made a distinctive "chunk, chunk" sound as characters were punched.
For applications that required the filling-in of specific fields within the punched cards, the machine could be programmed (using another punched card, of course) to automatically advance to the beginning of each field, only accept certain character types within the field, copy a template card, and so on.

IBM was then in danger of falling behind other companies, such as Remington Rand, which realized that the potential benefits of digital computing justified a clean break with past practice.
IBM's labs developed ferrite core memory for the Model 704, transistor logic and circuit printing for the 7030 and 7090, the RAMAC disk memory....the list is nearly endless.
During the late 60's IBM was developing a new series of disk drives with the main technical objective of storing at least 30 megabytes and having an average access time of 30 milliseconds or less, so it was known as the 30-30 _a la_ "Winchester" rifle fame.

 The IBM 026 Key Punch
These were superseded starting about 1964 by the 029 punch which was required for the IBM 360 because it used the EBCDIC character set rather than earlier BCD variants of the 7000-series (026s remained in use in non-IBM shops -- e.g.
This was virtually identical in appearance and function to the 026, put it could be connected to the IBM 402, 403, or 419 accounting machine as an output device.

 Doug Jones's punched card codes
IBM's BCD codes were all more complex, partly because of a desire to represent the numeral zero with the 6-bit numeric code 000000 (in the IBM 704, 709, 7040 and 7090) or with 001010 (in the IBM 705, 7080, 1401, 1410 and 1414).
The IBM model 026 keypunch, introduced in July 1949, was the workhorse of much early work in business data processing, and although it was incapable of automatically punching the large character set required by most programming languages, many model 026 punches remained in use into the early 1970's.
Given the sparse nature of the IBM 026 character set and the larger character sets supported by printers of the era, many computer manufacturers developed proprietary extensions of their own, some with a great degree of compatability with IBM's later character set extensions, and some with little or no compatability.

Punch card   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In that year, punched cards were made a standard size, exactly 7-3/8 inch by 3-1/4 inch (187.325 by 82.55 mm), reportedly corresponding to the US currency of the day, though some sources characterise this assertion as urban legend.
The IBM 80-column punching format, with rectangular holes, eventually won out over the UNIVAC 90-character format, which used 45 columns (2 characters in each) of 12 round holes.
IBM punch cards could be used with early computers in a binary mode where every column (or row) was treated as a simple bitfield, and every combination of holes was permitted.

 The IBM 029 Key Punch
The IBM 29 Card Punch (also called the 029 or Type 029 Key Punch or Keypunch), introduced about 1964 to coincide with the introduction of the IBM 360.
Although the repertoire of the 029 card punch is only 64 characters (sufficient to program in Fotran, PL/I, and Cobol), EBCDIC is an 8-bit set with a capacity of 256 characters.
In 1971, IBM announced its last key punch, the 129, which was an 029 with buffer memory, allowing data to be entered, checked, and edited before committing it to the card; storing up to six different formatting programs (equivalent to program-drum cards); and able to accumulate counts and totals.
