The IBM 355 was announced on September 14, 1956 as an addition to the popular IBM 650.
A major advance over the IBM 350 and IBM 1405 was the use of a separate arm and head for each recording surface, with all the arms moving in and out together like a big comb.
The 2311 stored 7.25 million bytes on a single removable IBM 1316 disk pack (the same type used on the IBM 1311) consisting of six platters that rotated as a single unit.

The IBM 3310 Direct Access Storage was a compact, economically priced, high-performance direct access storage device for use with the IBM 4331 Processor.
An optional 2311 and 2314/19 compatibility feature allowed these devices to be emulated on the IBM 3310.
By installing a special feature, DASD Adapter could read data from an IBM 3348 Data Module which was recorded on an IBM System/3 Model 12 or 15, to aid in conversion from a System/3 to 4331 Processor.

IBM dominated the computer industry after introducing the System/360 computers in 1964.
The 360 was not just one machine, but a series of upward-compatible machines designed to span the full circle (hence the name "360") from commercial data processing to scientific applications.
The machines were so popular that IBM initially had trouble filling the orders.

Most IBM 1131 models included an internal 1 Mb removable-cartridge hard disk drive occasionally called the "Ramkit." We believe that the 1130 was the first IBM product to feature this, or any, easily removable single-platter disk.
The disk was organized as 203 cylinders, two surfaces, four sectors per surface, and 321 16-bit words per sector.
The IBM 2315 disk cartridge used by the 1130 should be familiar to most minicomputer users of the era, as its design was licensed by IBM to DEC, Hewlett-Packard, Wang, Xerox, Diablo, Bruker and many other computer manufacturers.
