IBM 407 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM 407 Accounting Machine, introduced in 1949, was the culmination of a long line of IBM tabulating equipment (including the 405 and 402), dating back to the days of Herman Hollerith.
The 407 read punch cards, totaled fields on the cards, made simple decisions, printed results, and, with the aid of a summary punch, output results on cards that could be input to other processing steps.
In the late 1950s, the 407 was adapted as an input/output device on early computers, such as the IBM 650.

In the fourth-quarter 2004, IBM announced an agreement to sell the Personal Computing Division, a unit of the Personal Systems Group, which is expected to close in the second-quarter 2005.
IBM's effective tax rate from continuing operations in the first quarter 2005 was 30.0 percent, compared with 30.1 percent in the first quarter of 2004.

 The IBM 407 Accounting Machine
The 407 reads a deck of punched cards on their integrated card reader (left), accumulate totals, subtotals, or other simple statistics in counters made of gears, and print the results on their integrated 132-column line printer (center).
As with all IBM punch-card equipment (except the key punch and sorter), a control panel (left) is wired to specify the details of operation: what card columns to read and what to do with them, how to format the report.
In 1955, the 407 was adapted to act as an input/output device for the IBM 650 computer, and would later perform similar roles for other IBM calculators (such as the CPC-II) and computers (7090); reportedly, a 407 even served as the "system clock" for Columbia's 7094.

 IBM 650
IBM sold nearly two thousand units of the IBM 650, and it was the first computer to make a significant profit for its manufacturer.
IBM's drum memory 650 computer, announced in 1953, sold for $200,000 to $400,000 and was a great success: more than 1800 were sold or leased.
What really makes the IBM 650 the ancestor of personal computers is that it popularized a concept known as "open shop programming." Prior to the IBM 650, computers were so expensive that most programmers did not have physical access to them.

IBM Archives: IBM 407 accounting machine
The IBM 407 accounting machine prepared reports and records from punched cards.
Introduced on July 19, 1949, the 407 read 80-column cards, positioned forms, recorded details, and added and subtracted to print any desired combination of totals up to 150 lines per minute.
The Type 407 had been in the IBM product line for almost three decades when IBM withdrew the last of the models from marketing on December 17, 1976.

 IBM1130.org: Printers
Its mechanism, taken from the obsolete IBM 407 punch-card accounting system, generated 88 interrupts per second while printing, with immediate attention required for each interrupt to avoid a printer fault.
However, that CPU's low speed was artificial, implemented as a delay in the operation of a "normal" CPU to make a lower-cost system marketable, and as a workaround IBM's engineers simply disabled the CPU slowdown while a printer interrupt was pending.
Clever users discovered this and found a way to speed up their programs: they started the 1132 and then, without clearing the printer interrupt, went about their CPU-intensive work at the higher speed.
