IBM Archives: 650 RAMAC fact sheet 1959
Linked to the 650 is the IBM 355 memory disk file.
The productivity of the IBM RAMAC 650 may be expanded with the use of magnetic tape units to provide concentrated storage of great volumes of information for high-speed reading and writing.
With the IBM 355 magnetic disk memory unit, the RAMAC 650 system is able to go directly to a specific piece of information without searching for it through all the other stored data.

 IBM 650
IBM sold nearly two thousand units of the IBM 650, and it was the first computer to make a significant profit for its manufacturer.
IBM's drum memory 650 computer, announced in 1953, sold for $200,000 to $400,000 and was a great success: more than 1800 were sold or leased.
What really makes the IBM 650 the ancestor of personal computers is that it popularized a concept known as "open shop programming." Prior to the IBM 650, computers were so expensive that most programmers did not have physical access to them.

IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator Introduced in 1953
The IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator was notable for its high-speed magnetic storage drum permitting rapid access to data.
This was intended to be a less powerful version of the 701 Computer, but its easy configuration caused the system to be one of the best selling computers of the 1950's, with about 2000 units installed before it was discontinued in the early 1960's.

The IBM 650 was one of IBM’s early computers, and the world’s first mass-produced computer.
The 650 is a two-address, bi-quinary coded decimal machine (both data and addresses were decimal), with memory on a rotating drum.
The 650 was specifically designed for users of existing IBM unit record equipment (electro-mechanical punched card-processing machines) upgrading from so-called Calculating Punches, like the IBM 604 model, to computers proper.

 IBM Archives: IBM 650
Announced 50 years ago (in 1953), the IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing Machine brought a new level of reliability to the young field of electronic computing.
For example, whenever a random processing error occurred, the 650 could automatically repeat portions of the processing by restarting the program at one of a number of breaking points and then go on to complete the processing if the error did not reoccur.
At the time the 650 was announced, IBM said it would be "a vital factor in familiarizing business and industry with the stored program principles." And it certainly did just that.

 The IBM 650
The IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing Machine was announced 2 July 1953 (as the "Magnetic Drum Calculator", or MDC), but not delivered until December 1954 (same time as the NORC).
In any case, the IBM 650 was the first general-purpose computer to be installed and used at Columbia University (the NORC was built here in 1950-54, but the only Columbians who were able to use it were a couple Watson Lab insiders [61,65]).
The 650 had a followon, the IBM 7070 (1959), architecturally similar but with transistors instead of tubes and cores instead of a drum, and which came with not only card reader and punch, but also typewriter console, and (optionally) disk and tape drives, line printers, etc.

 Dr. Dobb's | The IBM 650 | October 22, 2001
The IBM 650 was the first computer on which IBM made a meaningful profit, selling around 2000 of them.
Since many instructions on the 650 could execute in around 3 milliseconds, you would try to optimize your code by placing the instructions on the drum in such a way that it would not take the drum a full revolution to access your next instruction.
All input and output to the IBM 650 was done through punched cards, which were the prevailing method of transmitting data to and from computers in the 1950s and 1960s.

 The First Generation, 1950 - 1960
But it outsold them all, partly because of IBM's reputation and existing customer base of punched card users, and partly because the 650 was perceived to be easier to program and more reliable that its competitors.
Ironically, the 650 had less impact among the business customers for whom it was intended than it had at universities, who were able to acquire the computer at a deep discount.
IBM engineers took pains to make the machine easy to program, especially by those who were comfortable with punched card tabulators, but who know nothing of stored program computers.

IBM cranks up pSeries Power 4+chip speed | The Register
IBM is claiming a big price/performance advantage based on current HP prices, and that will put pressure on HP to adjust its prices downward in competitive bids.
One of the reasons why IBM can cut prices to the bone with the pSeries 650 is that the Power4+ chip at the heart of the machine is based on a single chip module implementation of the Power4 processor that has been dramatically shrunk using a new 0.13 micron copper/SOI process.
IBM is relying on the combination of a decent performance increase and a decent price cut to get customers to stop paying attention to clock cycle comparisons.

CNN - Big Blue to go online with home PCs - October 21, 1999
IBM officials, who said the company will continue to sell its more profitable ThinkPad line of laptops through retailers, said the decision is not a precursor to selling its various lines of high-end desktop systems to corporate users online.
IBM's decision to sell over the Internet was driven largely by cutthroat pricing of components and systems by its major competitors and suppliers, the overhead costs of selling through dealers, and the inability to sufficiently differentiate its products among dozens of others in storefronts.
In fact, IBM officials said the home line sells best in Japan where Japanese retailers set aside space in their stores just for the IBM systems, and have a trained and dedicated sales force that is paid commissions.

Palm Treo 650 (Cingular, GSM/GPRS) Reviews. Smartphones Reviews by CNET.
Of course, the Treo 650 is not the most compact smart phone on the market; models including the RIM BlackBerry 7100t and Windows Mobile 2003 smart phones such as the Audiovox SMT5600 and the Motorola MPx220 are all significantly smaller, though they don't have a full QWERTY keyboard.
In other words, the Treo 650 acts more like a cell phone and less like a handheld that needs to be tethered to a PC at regular intervals to recharge and to back up data.
The bigger issue is that you can't use the Treo 650 as a wireless modem for your laptop when you are on the road and there are no Wi-Fi hot spots within range.
