IBM 700/7000 series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM 700/7000 series was a series of incompatible large scale (mainframe) computer systems made by IBM through the 1950s and early 1960s.
The IBM 7094, with seven index registers had a "compatibility" mode to permit programs from earlier machines that used this trick to continue to be used.
The IBM 7080 was a transistorized version of the 705, with various improvements.

In May, 1955 IBM lost the bid because of this unanticipated change of direction in their proposal.
Instruction pipelining, prefetch and decoding, and memory interleaving were used in later supercomputer designs such as the IBM System/360 Models 91, 95 and 195, and the IBM 3090 series as well as computers from other manufacturers.
U.S. National Security Agency in February 1962 as the main CPU of the IBM 7950 Harvest system, used until 1976 when the IBM 7955 Tractor tape system developed problems due to worn cams that could not be replaced.

 A Short History Of TPF
It was a mere 30 days later that IBM responded to American with a proposal to make a study of the airline's problems and it was 1957 by the time the direction was firmed up and formal agreements reached.
Initially the hardware it ran on was an IBM 7090 processor, a second generation computer using disk files and specialized terminals developed for the airline reservation function.
IBM supplied the source for the operating system to its customers, which probably goes back to those days when ACP was just a part of the PARS system that included the applications that would need to be customized for the user's requirements.

IBM's top management accepted the recommendation, and IBM began work on the System/360, so named because of the intention to cover the full range of computing tasks.
IBM made a big event of the System/360 announcement on April 7, 1964, holding press conferences in 62 U.S. cities and fourteen foreign countries.
IBM received 2,000 orders within the first five months after the 360 announcement and maintained its market share at about two-thirds of the mainframe computing market.

 Doug Jones's punched card codes
IBM's BCD codes were all more complex, partly because of a desire to represent the numeral zero with the 6-bit numeric code 000000 (in the IBM 704, 709, 7040 and 7090) or with 001010 (in the IBM 705, 7080, 1401, 1410 and 1414).
The IBM model 026 keypunch, introduced in July 1949, was the workhorse of much early work in business data processing, and although it was incapable of automatically punching the large character set required by most programming languages, many model 026 punches remained in use into the early 1970's.
Given the sparse nature of the IBM 026 character set and the larger character sets supported by printers of the era, many computer manufacturers developed proprietary extensions of their own, some with a great degree of compatability with IBM's later character set extensions, and some with little or no compatability.

The Macro Assembly Program for the IBM 7080 was reportedly one of the best, and the Assemblers for the successor Systems/360 were rather poor by comparison until Assembler H came out, which was an unplanned product.
It's ironical that IBM's adoption of the wild duck H was prompted only by its vastly faster operating system generation (sysgen, in the jargon of the time), where macrodefinitions were heavily used and were a great illustration of the benefit of the approach.
IBM missed the lesson and adopted instead the grotesque PL/M for a while.
