IBM Archives: 7090 Data Processing System (continued)
As a result of this IBM standardization program and the compact packaging of the circuitry, the modular units may be placed side by side and thus minimize space requirements.
This feature used with an interpretive program (the memory capacity of the IBM 7090 must be twice that required by the 704 for the program) to enable most programs written for the IBM 704 to run on the IBM 7090.
In turn, the IBM 7090 may prepare punched card and magnetic tape records, which may be used as input to any other IBM data processing system.

 IBM 7090/94 Architecture Home Page
The IBM 7090/94 series was the most popular family of large second-generation transistorized mainframe computers and was designed for "large-scale scientific and technological applications".
By 1965, over 300 IBM 7090/94 systems had been installed with an average purchase price of about $3-million (most were rented from IBM for about $70,000 per month or for about $450,000 per month in today's money as adjusted for inflation).
In low-end installations, IBM 1401(s) would typically be used to read cards and transfer the information for input to the 7090/94 from magnetic tapes.

Fool.com: IBM's Accounting Tricks [Fool on the Hill] February 20, 2002
In her column (free subscription required) last Friday, she examined IBM's sale of its optical transceiver business to JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU) for $340 million on the last day of last quarter.
A careful analysis of IBM's 1999 10-K reveals that the company used at least $1.6 billion of the $5 billion generated by the sale of its Global Network business in a similar fashion.
I first warned investors about IBM in January 2000, highlighted last May how the company's overly aggressive pension-fund accounting was inflating earnings, and only a month ago, wrote that IBM "recently reported fourth-quarter sales that were lower than those five years ago.

Fifty years of IBM innovation with information storage on magnetic tape
The IBM 729 Model III, with the introduction of pairs of three-position assemblies which moved pinch rollers that allowed the tape to be engaged by the appropriate capstans, called prolays, allowed improved start-stop performance and a significant reduction in mechanical complexity.
As the 20th century drew to a close, the IBM LTO was announced, and a new technology roadmap began for tape [17].
The IBM LTO Model 3580 head was the first IBM tape drive recording head to break away from the older modular closed and contoured head designs that had carried the burden of linear tape drive recording for so long.

IBM 1410 - Jay Jaeger   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Because the IBM 1410 was a decimal, character-oriented system, the lights were not encoded in binary, somewhat atypical as compared to most mini-computers and some mainframes of the day.
One interesting characteristic of the IBM 1410 was that it could also, at the flip of a switch, fully emulate it's predecessor, the immensely popular IBM 1401.
The IBM 1410 SPOOL program (SPOOL stands for Simultaneous Peripheral Operation On Line) was used on 1410's that had replaced IBM 1401's which were often used for card-to-tape and tape-to-print operations, essentially acting as "front ends" for IBM's powerful 7000 series scientific computers of the day.

IBM was not able to commit to as rapid a delivery as UCRL desired, so instead proposed a more powerful machine.
IBM feared that Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) might order a LARC, but in September of 1955 made a preliminary proposal to LASL which was received with interest.
IBM began design studies, and starting in November of 1955, a series of "Stretch Memos" proposed the development of a computer with performance "100 to 200 times the 704".

IBM 1401, a User´s Manual was written, arranged and produced by Jóhann Jóhannsson.
All electronic sounds were derived from the IBM 1401 Data Processing System and the Hammond B3 organ with Ring Modulator, Distortion and Filter pedals.
The music and sounds of the IBM 1401 Data Processing System were recorded by Jóhann Gunnarsson, Örn Kaldalóns and Elías Davíðsson in Reykjavik in 1971.

The IBM 1401, one of the first affordable business computers, was in service from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, and the recordings were made by the composer's father.
The story behind the release is interesting, and definitely worth retelling, as Jóhannsson's father worked for IBM in Iceland roughly 40 years back when they got their first 1401 Data Processing System.

 Johann Johannsson: IBM 1401, A User's Manual | Puddlegum
Johann Johannsson is adding to the list of great albums from Iceland that have floated into the indie rock embrace with the release of IBM 1401, A User's Manual.
As the story goes, Johann's father (Johann Gunnarsson) was an IBM computer technician, working on the IBM 1401 mainframe computer forty years ago.
Inspired by the melodies and sentimental beauty of the story, Johann Johannsson wrote a movement for a string quartet "to be performed by a string quartet as the accompaniment to a dance piece by the choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir." Johannsson performed A User's Manual in 40 cities in Europe before recording the album for 4AD Records.

Jóhann Jóhannsson - Ibm 1401: A Users Manual : album review
Back in what middle-aged people are already referring to as 'the day', the arrival of the first affordable calculators into the family home induced a level of wonderment now only matched in awe by endless incidents of modern tragedy.
Building on the tapes of sine-wave tones recorded by Jóhannsson Snr, IBM 1401, A User's Manual is a work of soaring melancholy mitigated by the discovery of a kind of new life.
Contrasting the clipped instructional detail of a technical manual with the butterfly metamorphosis of the 401's first stirrings, Jóhannsson pulls off a master stroke of poetic disparity between the mechanical and the spiritual.

Dr. Dobb's | It's Not Easy Being Green (or "Red"): The IBM Stretch Project | August 12, 2001
In the early to mid 1950s, IBM and UNIVAC, the only two large companies building computers, were beginning to consider transistors as a viable manufacturing technology for their products.
While customers were generally happy with the machine's performance, Stretch was considered a failure within IBM for not meeting its speed benchmark—with the consequence that IBM had to reduce the price from $13.5 million to $7.78 million, thus guaranteeing that every machine was built at a loss.
Hundreds of IBM engineers had dramatically pushed the industry forward during the Stretch project, and Stretch alumni went on to contribute to some of the most important technologies still in use today.

Be warned that this OEM drive will probably come with no documentation, and that there will be no end user IBM warranty (end user IBM warranties only come with retail packaging) -- you'll have to depend on your reseller for a warranty, so choose one with care.

Inspired by a recording of an IBM mainframe computer which Jóhann’s father, Jóhann Gunnarsson, made on a reel-to-reel tape machine more than 30 years ago, the piece was originally written to be performed by a string quartet as the accompaniment to a dance piece by the choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir.
For the album version, Jóhann rewrote the entire score, and it was recorded by a sixty-piece string orchestra.
