IBM was not able to commit to as rapid a delivery as UCRL desired, so instead proposed a more powerful machine.
IBM feared that Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) might order a LARC, but in September of 1955 made a preliminary proposal to LASL which was received with interest.
IBM began design studies, and starting in November of 1955, a series of "Stretch Memos" proposed the development of a computer with performance "100 to 200 times the 704".

 IBM 7030 Summary
IBM's bid was based on a renegotiation clause for its proposed machine that would be four to five times faster than requested and cost $3.5 million rather than the requested $2.5 million.
When IBM lost the bid on its high-performance decimal (base-10) computer system the company decided to begin a redesign of the project, and the STRETCH project was begun in 1955.
Instruction pipelining, prefetch and decoding, and memory interleaving were used in later supercomputer designs such as the IBM System/360 Models 91, 95 and 195, and the IBM 3090 series as well as computers from other manufacturers.

The Tech Report - IBM GXP fiasco secrets revealed
The fiasco led to the filing of a class-action lawsuit against IBM on behalf of GXP failure victims.
IBM was quite apparently engaging in a pattern of deception and knowingly shipping faulty products to customers while hiding behind rhetoric about standard industry failure rates and the like.
Obviously, IBM's decision to bail out of the hard drive business was an indicator that GXP failures were a serious problem.

IBM 7950 Harvest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM 7950, also known as Harvest, was a one-of-a-kind adjunct to the Stretch computer which was installed at the US National Security Agency (NSA).
A value could be anything from 1 to 16 contiguous bits, without regard to alignment, and the streams could be as simple as data laid out in memory, or data read repeatedly, under the control of multiply-nested "do"-loop descriptors which were interpreted by the hardware.
Two programming languages, Alpha and Beta (not be confused with Simula-inspired BETA programming language) were designed for programming it, and IBM provided a compiler for the former around the time the machine was delivered.

IBM speeds push into 3D virtual worlds, News at CNET.co.uk
IBM is ramping up its push into virtual worlds with an investment of roughly $10 million over the next 12 months, including an expanded presence within the popular online universe Second Life.
A spokesman for IBM said its goals go far beyond Second Life, although it currently has its largest virtual world presence there, and that the company eventually wants to see all 'multiverses' integrated into a seamless whole.
"IBM's ultimate aim is for inter-world integration, instead of separate islands of virtual worlds where you cannot cross over from one to the other in a consistent way," he said.

There is no doubting that the GeForce 7950 GX2 is the fastest video card on the market today that fits into a single PCI-Express x16 interconnect, and it holds that crown by a good distance in the majority of titles.
In fact, probably the only title where the GeForce 7950 GX2 loses out to competing solutions is not because it lacks speed, but because it lacks forward looking features like support for 16-bit floating point High Dynamic Range Lighting in conjunction with a multisample Anti Aliasing pattern.

IBM cool water technology sucked up by Panduit | The Register
IBM's CoolBlue scheme to bring back water-cooled computing has been boosted by a licensing deal with networking manufacturer Panduit.
Water cooling was standard practice on early mainframes, but cooler running electronics allowed data centres to switch to air-cooled computers, with the chilled water going to the air-con units instead.
IBM says that because water can carry 3,500 times more heat than air, it can reduce cooling power needs by 70 per cent without requiring extra fans.

AnandTech: NVIDIA Single Card, Multi-GPU: GeForce 7950 GX2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
There are quite a few tests in which both the 7950 GX2 and the 7900 GT SLI configurations are CPU limited or perform very similarly, but at higher resolutions we do see some differentiation.
Thus, we are able to bring you a comparison of the performance scaling between 7900 GT and SLI and 7950 GX2 in single and multi-GPU mode.
In some cases, scaling does make a difference in where the performance falls between the 7950 GX2 and the 7900 GT SLI solutions, but it does look like the majority of the performance differences between the two solutions is due to clock speeds and other features which are constant between single and multi-GPU arrangements.
