IBM PC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original 1981 IBM PC's keyboard was severely criticised by typists for its non-standard placement of the return and left shift keys.
The original IBM PC used the 7 bit ASCII alphabet as the basis, but in addition this was extended to an 8 bit somewhat haphazardly collected set of characters unique for the IBM PC.
In 1988 IBM introduced a drive for 2.88 megabyte "DSED" diskettes in its top-of-the-line models; it was an instant failure and is all but forgotten today (but survives as a possible "size" choice in disk-formatting utilities).

IBM Convertible   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The IBM Convertible was the follow-on to the IBM Portable, and was IBM's first attempt at a laptop computer.
The Convertible had two 3.5", 720 kilobyte floppy disk drives (the first IBM PC to come with 3.5" drives as standard equipment), and could accept a number of attachments and gadgets (including a thermal printer and special monitors that attached to the LCD port).
However, the Convertible was heavy, not much faster than the Portable it replaced (despite the newer CMOS processor and use of static RAM), didn't come with traditional PC expansion ports (such as serial ports and a parallel port) without an add-on, and had a hard-to-read, oddly-shaped LCD screen (the first screens lacked a backlight).

IBM Convertible computer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
IBM's first laptop computer is a big improvement over their earlier portable computer, the giant IBM Portable PC from 2 years earlier in 1984.
The Convertible has no standard expansion ports - you can install an internal modem ($450), and on the back is the system bus for the optional adapters to be installed.
All of these adapters "convert" the Convertible into a more useful machine, but with all of them installed, the system grows an extra 7 inches in length and the weight increases from 12 pounds to 20 pounds, making it rather long and unwieldy, to say the least.

Although IBM no longer seems in a position to dictate the majority of PC standards (Intel and Microsoft seem to have taken on that role), all of the original PC specifications and standards were determined by IBM and set forth in its original line of personal computers.

This wasn't IBM's first attempt at a personal, or micro-computer, although it is by far their most successful.
This time IBM was determined to do it right - in order to save time and money, instead of developing their own hardware and software, they used already available off-the-shelf components.

IBM's release of DOS 4.0 (and the immediate subsequent release of a bugfix) was a dubious step "forward." DOS 4.0 was the first version of DOS to come with a warranty; the catch is that IBM warranted it only for a very slim list of IBM-packaged software.
