The IBM PC-AT was the first upgrade from the basic PC architecture introduced in 1981 (the XT expanded storage options, but not the processor, bus, chipset, etc.) The first ATs were released with a conservative 6 MHz processor which was quickly upgraded to 8 MHz.
The IBM PC AT was IBM's second generation PC (if you consider the XT an extension of the original PC).

So I installed IBM DOS 5.0 and the Windows that came on some of the disks that I got with it, this turned out to be Windows 2.03.
Quite obviously this wasn't the Windows that had previously been installed on it as there was MS Word on the hard disk and it wouldn't run with this version of Windows so I have now installed a cut down Windows 3.1 and that got it sorted.
Although this is marked on the case as an XT I think it is an AT as it has an AMD N80L286-12/S processor I am not even sure if it is the original motherboard.

We bought the XT in 1982 or 1983, our first PC, an upgrade from a dumb terminal that we used for word processing -- we did that by connecting to a STAR minicomputer in downtown Lansing via an $1200 1200 baud modem (which was bigger than the 20 meg hard drive on the XT).
Along with the XT, we bought one of the worst Okidata printers and a brand new word processing program, which the salesman confidently told us was "destined to be the best" -- Wordperfect!

The very first PC keyboard was the old 83-key keyboard used by IBM for the very first IBM PCs and PC/XTs in the early 1980s.
Of course, with the first keyboards IBM also engineered the keyboard interface, cabling and signaling standards that are mostly still in use today.
