IBM PC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IBM sold it in configurations with 16 kB and 64 kB of RAM preinstalled.
The original 1981 IBM PC's keyboard was severely criticised by typists for its non-standard placement of the return and left shift keys.
In 1988 IBM introduced a drive for 2.88 MB "DSED" diskettes in its top-of-the-line models; it was an instant failure and is all but forgotten today (but survives as a possible "size" choice in disk-formatting utilities).

IBM Personal System/2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IBM's PS/2 was designed to remain software compatible with their PC/AT/XT line of computers upon which the booming PC clone market was built, but the hardware was quite different.
The IBM Personal System/2 line introduced the Micro Channel Architecture (MCA for short) which was technically superior to the ISA bus and allowed for higher speed communications within the system.
IBM offered to sell a Micro Channel licence to anyone who could afford the royalty, but they not only required a royalty for every MCA-compatible machine sold, but also a payment for every IBM-compatible machine the particular maker had ever made in the past.

 PS/2 : Personal System/2
Although the open architecture of the earlier IBM PC and its succesors had been a great success, and IBM were the biggest single PC manufacturer, most of the market was buying faster and cheaper IBM compatible machines made by other firms.
Instead, IBM offered to sell a Microchannel licence to anyone who could afford the royalty—but that they would not only require a royalty for every PS/2 compatible machine sold, but also a payment for every IBM compatible machine the particular maker had ever made in the past.
The PS/2 models 25 and 30 were ISA-based (in other words, essentially IBM AT-like systems in a different form factor); the higher models were equipped with the Microchannel bus.

COMPUTERCRAFT - IBM PERSONAL SYSTEM/2 REFERENCE GUIDE
Much of what distinguishes an IBM system from that of the competition is a careful attention to the details of human factors design that cannot be measured with simple numbers; nonetheless, even comparisons of those traits that can be measured reveal the benefits of IBM's concern for every aspect of system design.
Without a complete understanding of the interrelationships of every subcomponent of the systems, decision makers might be swayed by marketing pitches that emphasize the specifications of certain sub-optimized components or carefully selected benchmarks that often demonstrate performance characteristics unrelated to actual system throughput in daily use.

 IBM 5155 portable computer
The system board is the same as that of the IBM Personal Computer XT with 256Kb of memory that is expandable to 512Kb using the memory expansion option.
The 5155 was IBM's response to the Compaq Portable computer, which was released one year prior, costs $700 less, but has the same CPU and runs just as fast.
This wasn't IBM's first portable computer, that would be the IBM 5100, released in 1975 - It was revolutionary, and extremely expensive.

 IBM Archives: IBM System/23 Datamaster
Announced by GSD in July 1981 — one month before the IBM Personal Computer — the System/23 Datamaster was another demonstration of IBM's efforts to shrink the size and cost of computing.
But it was the IBM Personal Computer, announced in August 1981-- and its immediate descendants — that took the features and characteristics of all these early small computers and provided them in one incredibly utilitarian machine.
If the IBM Personal Computer signaled the dawn of a new era in computing, then its quick ascent to mass acceptance and success had been made possible by those little remembered IBM pioneers that had come before.

IBM PCs and compatible models from other vendors are the most widely used computer systems in the world.
Note: "IBM PC" is used in this dictionary to denote IBM and compatible personal computers, and to distinguish these from other personal computers, though the phrase "PC" is often used elsewhere, by those who know no better, to mean "IBM PC or compatible".
When a new peripheral device, such as a monitor or scanner, is added to an IBM compatible, a corresponding, new controller board must be plugged into an expansion slot (in the bus) in order to electronically control its operation.

IBM did a very good job of building something that was, first of all, very durable, well-built, versatile.
And just the fact that it was IBM made a big difference, because people didn't know who the small companies were, but IBM is as synonymous with computers as any company has ever been.

The IBM 1130 Computing System was introduced in 1965.
It was IBM's least-expensive computer to date, and was aimed at price-sensitive, computing-intensive technical markets like education and engineering.
It became quite popular, and the 1130 and its non-IBM clones gave many people their first feel of "personal computing." Though its price-performance ratio was good and it notably included inexpensive disk storage, it otherwise broke no new ground technically.
