  Definition of System 36
The IBM System/36 was a simple and popular small business computer system, first shipped in 1983.
At this time, IBM had been about to consolidate its entire line (S/370, 4300, S/38, S/34) into one "family" of computers with the same ISAM database technology, programming languages, and hardware architecture.
But after the lawsuit was filed, IBM decided it would have two families: the System/38 line, intended for large companies and representing IBM's future direction, and the System/36 line, intended for small companies who had used the company's legacy System/3/32/34 computers.

 Definition of IBM System 3
Instead of the rectangular punches in the classic IBM card, the new cards had tiny (1 mm), circular holes much like paper tape.
Data was stored in six-bit binary-coded decimal code, with three rows of 32 characters each, or 8-bit EBCDIC, with the two extra holes located in the top rows.
IBM System/370s with a proper card reader could also process the new cards.

These systems are usually easier to develop, cheaper to buy and more accurate, but not as flexible as speaker adaptive or speaker independent systems.
A speaker adaptive system is developed to adapt its operation to the characteristics of new speakers.
The system serves as a testbed for several research projects, including robust feature extraction, connectionist phonetic likelihood estimation, automatic induction of multiple pronunciation lexicons, foreign accent detection and modeling, advanced language models, and lip-reading.

One interesting suggestion brought up was the possibility of creating a test for for drivers, similar to the "slab poisoning" test, to turn up poorly written or poorly designed device drivers that may be, driver by driver, adding to the latency problems in the kernel.

The driving system is a small, prebuilt OS/360 MFT system that will fit on a single small disk drive and run on nearly any IBM System/360 or 370 hardware.
The idea is to build a Hercules configuration that the supplied MFT starter system can talk to.

The OSSI (Open Storage Systems Interconnection) Reference Model (its new name) "provides the framework for a series of standards for application and user interfaces to open storage systems." One of its prime purposes is to define a common vocabulary.
On most 32-bit systems the offsets passed around inside the kernel (most importantly, at the VFS layer) the file offsets and sizes tend to be passed as 32-bit (signed) integers, meaning no files >2^31.
I will also note that, for a complex but reparable system such as an autochanger, each subsystem may have a separate MTBF and a different lifetime, which may be combined to give one figure for the unit as a whole.
