Smarter Radio - Ibiquity Forbes 8-6-02
Today IBiquity Digital, the privately held outfit cooking up the next generation of conventional radio technology that makes AM sound like FM and FM sound like a CD, says it is acquiring all the radio-related intellectual property of a firm called Command Audio.
IBiquity's mission is to defend conventional broadcast radio against the up-and-coming threat of satellite radio services, particularly XM Satellite Radio (nasdaq: XMSR - news - people) and Sirius Satellite Radio (nasdaq: SIRI - news - people).
If IBiquity's plans to roll out digital services by the start of 2003 are still on track, you can expect to start hearing a lot more about digital radio in the months to come.

Shipment of the receivers is an important development for Ibiquity and for radio, which has remained unchanged since the introduction of FM radio in 1961.
Ibiquity formed in 2000, and it persuaded the Federal Communications Commission in 2002 to approve its technology that allows radio stations to beam analog and digital radio signals simultaneously.

And new digital broadcasts from some stations, based on a technology developed by Ibiquity, a privately held concern backed by several publicly held media companies, are set to go live next year.
The result, the company says, will be that signals in the AM, FM and shortwave bands have a longer reach and sound better without adding significant cost to the purchase price of a radio, and without adding any financial burden to broadcasters.
Ibiquity is essentially an intellectual property firm that is licensing its patents to manufacturers and broadcasters in a Qualcomm-like (nasdaq: QCOM - news - people) plan to earn royalties.

washingtonpost.com: Clearing a Path for Digital Radio
IBiquity requires new equipment of broadcasters; consumers' old radios will continue to work, although the most attractive new features will require new equipment.
For iBiquity to succeed, it needs the cooperation of traditionally independent sectors: the manufacturers that create the radios, the broadcasters that deliver the signal and create the content, and car companies that install the new radios.
IBiquity would make money by charging broadcasting fees and by licensing its technology to manufacturers of radio receivers and transmitters.

The United States is also notable for creating a separate transmission system for digital radio.
An in-band on-channel (IBOC) system developed by iBiquity will be used instead of the Eureka 147 Digital Audio Broadcast system that has been selected in Europe.
This is partially due to the fact that the L band normally used for that technology is unavailable in the U.S. However, the American IBOC system uses COFDM, as does Eureka 147 and another standard known as Digital Radio Mondiale.
