Unexpectedly, the iBook is a bit larger and heavier than the PowerBook G3 (Lombard).
The iBook Special Edition was introduced on February 16, 2000, the same day the iBook was boosted to 64 MB of memory and a 6 GB hard drive.
(The improved iBook is generally refered to as Revision B.) The 300 MHz iBook was replaced with a 366 MHz version in September 2000.

Like most Macs, the iBook would enter sleep mode when closed, saving the state it was in before entering sleep; This made it ideal for the student who was running between classes with limited time, as they did not have to wait for a shut-down or "hibernate" sequence in in other operating systems.
October 23, 2003 - iBook G4 launched, marking the retirement of the PowerPC G3 processor across all of the Apple range, and hence Mac OS 9 is no longer bootable on any shipping machine, except for the legacy Power Macintosh G4 computers Apple continues to sell (as of April 2004).
The new iBook featured a G4 with 256 KB L2 cache (half that of the PowerBooks of the same era) running on a 133 MHz bus at 800 MHz on the 12" iBook as well as the lower 14" model, and 1 GHz on the upper 14" model, almost all fitted with slot-load "combo" drives.

IBook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 2nd generation (white) iBook with translucent case finish (up to 800mhz) was known as one of the most stylish and desirable designs in a notebook line.
The first iBook was the first mainstream computer ever designed and sold with internal wireless networking.
iBook G4s do not feature an socket for audio input commonly found on PC Laptops in the form of a line in or microphone socket, even though the iBook G4 has an internal circuitry for an electret microphone mounted in the display lid of the case.

 IBook G4 800MHz Review
The new iBook G4 is, compared to the old one, more gray/white and doesn't have that metal finish.
Panther is a big improvement for the G3 too, but no match for the iBook G4 with it's faster frontside bus, processor and RAM, not forgetting the graphics chip, which is about a zillion times faster.
Further note that the iBook G3 is the only machine for which the "fastest" config actually IS the fastest.

The iBook G4 is thin, too — a svelte 3.42 cm (1.35 inches), to be exact — making this impressive notebook small enough to fit in a backpack and light enough to carry around all day.
The iBook was designed with durability in mind, using ultra-tough polycarbonate plastic — the same material used in bulletproof glass — with an internal magnesium frame for added strength.

As shipped, recent-model Apple iBook and PowerBook portable computers are set to go to sleep when you close the lid (folding the screen down until the latch closes).
On a Powerbook, if the external display is active (something plugged into the video connector) the computer does not sleep but turns off the internal display (this is called "clamshell mode") but does go to sleep in the event that display is disconnected.
Working with an iBook G4 (whose magnet is on the bottom half of the computer, near the right edge just below the right-arrow key) I have found that two layers of material cut from tin-can lids work quite well.

The 2001 iBook would take the prize as the most beautiful notebook ever made, period, if Apple hadn't already set the bar so high with the Titanium iBook, which is, from top to bottom, a work of art.
From the soft, glowing Apple logo on the front of the iBook to the ghostly throb of the sleep light on the front edge to the elegant metallic surface that makes up the keyboard housing and palm rests, the whole thing has the look of something that was designed, not manufactured.

Had something not been done, the iBook line was in danger of becoming a white elephant-running the outdated G3 processor while all other Mac models, including the lowly eMac™;, have been moved to the G4.
Thanks to the iBook's small form factor, we were able to fit its tiny power adapter into the Acme Made case as well.
Nevertheless, we were certain that the iBook never got as hot as its aluminum-cased PowerBook cousin, which had us squirming in discomfort after as little as a half-hour.

The iBook has been replaced by the MacBook in May of 2006.
Although the repair program covers iBook G3 computers, there is an online petition to encourage Apple to acknowledge that defect exists in iBook G4 computers as well.
Although it was possible to oneself splice the three wires to get the screen working again, Apple otherwise refused to address the issue (fix the three wires) other than to require replacement of the entire screen for a cost roughly equivalent to an entire new computer.

Macworld: Review: iBook G4 and Mac mini: Minor updates, major value
The latest revisions to the iBook G4 and Mac mini lines fall somewhere between these extremes; their additional standard features are few, but lower prices significantly increase their value.
The iBook G4 line has been streamlined to two models: a $999 computer with a 12-inch display, a 1.33GHz processor, a 40GB hard drive, a CD-burning Combo drive; and a $1,299 model with a 14-inch display, a 1.42GHz processor, a 60GB hard drive, and a DVD-burning SuperDrive.
In the iBook line, the 12-inch model is simply a better machine, mainly because of its nicer-looking display and greater portability; the downside, of course, is that it’s slower and can’t be outfitted with a SuperDrive (the only DVD burner that will let you burn DVDs from Apple’s iDVD or DVD Studio Pro).

When I saw the first press photos of the white iBook nearly four years ago, I was immediately convinced that Apple had got this one right from the get-go, and had a winner on its hands.
In terms of conventional laptop computers, the 12” iBook’s dimensions are pretty close to ideal in my estimation -- its footprint and squared-off lines being virtually the same (except for thickness) as those of the PowerBooks 5300 and 1400 which are also both favorites of mine.
The dual USB iBook had everything most of us really need in a laptop right from the start, and subsequent updates, enhancements, and of course the midlife-metamorphosis from G3 to G4 power, along with an entry-level price dropping to $999, have not only sustained but improved the value equation with the passage of time.

The same is true for the speedbumped iBooks released in October (no surprise here since the architecture of the iBook hasn't changed).
