IBook - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first iBook was the first mainstream computer ever designed and sold with internal wireless networking.
The original iBook design was discontinued in May 2001, in favor of the new "Dual USB" iBooks.
A PowerPC G4 chip, slot-loading optical drives and a solid white case and keyboard were added on October 23, 2003—finally ending Apple’s use of the G3 chip.

Sliced Apple - Adding Internal Bluetooth to iBook G4   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
I noticed on the PoIrBook that the cable grounded to the case near the connection to the motherboard and that a convenient and unused screw hole also existed in the iBook near the motherboard connector, so the same was done with the iBook.
I previously mentioned, while the iBook was open I also replaced the hard drive with the 60 GB unit from the PoIrBook and installed the PoIrBooks DVD-RW to replace the iBook's combo drive.
From the photos the antenna in factory BT equipped iBooks is clearly a distinct component from the factory installed Airport only antenna, which I found surprising.

 IBook G4 800MHz Review
The new iBook G4 is, compared to the old one, more gray/white and doesn't have that metal finish.
The biggest difference between the two is really the keyboard, which is far better on the iBook G4, thanks to a metal backplate and a more solid, powerbooky feel.
Panther is a big improvement for the G3 too, but no match for the iBook G4 with it's faster frontside bus, processor and RAM, not forgetting the graphics chip, which is about a zillion times faster.

 iBook G4 first impressions
Wayne wrote with his first impressions on the new iBook G4 including comments on the design, heat, battery life, performance, Panther/10.3 and the dual display mod (working).
I've been using it lightly all afternoon trying to wear the battery down for calibration, and this iBook went about five and a half hours on maximum performance mode before sleeping, and this is assuming a probably partially full battery from the factory.
The G4 933 outperformed the G3/800 in every subtest across the board, though the G3 is running Jaguar, and the G4 Panther, so that might have something to do with it.

Macworld: Review: iBook G4 and Mac mini: Minor updates, major value
The latest revisions to the iBook G4 and Mac mini lines fall somewhere between these extremes; their additional standard features are few, but lower prices significantly increase their value.
The iBook G4 line has been streamlined to two models: a $999 computer with a 12-inch display, a 1.33GHz processor, a 40GB hard drive, a CD-burning Combo drive; and a $1,299 model with a 14-inch display, a 1.42GHz processor, a 60GB hard drive, and a DVD-burning SuperDrive.
In the iBook line, the 12-inch model is simply a better machine, mainly because of its nicer-looking display and greater portability; the downside, of course, is that it’s slower and can’t be outfitted with a SuperDrive (the only DVD burner that will let you burn DVDs from Apple’s iDVD or DVD Studio Pro).

The iBook G4 was replaced in May 2006 by the Intel Core Duo powered MacBook.
The G4 iBook is also fairly similar to the white version of the MacBook, again the easiest way is to check System Profile for your CPU type - the MacBook uses an Intel Core Duo processor.
The iBook G4 Dual USB has all of its components on one logic board, as such it is not possible to upgrade your CPU without a logic board replacement.

With the introduction of the G4 iBooks in October 2003, Apple phased out the last Macs with G3 processors, which had been in use since November 1997.
Although the G4 iBooks use a G4 CPU, it's not the same one used in the PowerBook G4 - this version has only a 256 KB level 2 cache, which means it won't provide the same performance as a PowerBook at the same clock speed.

Both iBook models have brilliant 1024-by-768-pixel resolution — ideal for doing everything from working on spreadsheets to displaying your movies and digital pictures in millions of colors (incidentally, the iBook display scales down beautifully, again with millions of colors, for special games and applications optimized for 800-by-600 or 640-by-480 pixel resolutions).
The 14.1-inch iBook packs a powerful punch with a 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 processor and 256K on-chip level 2 cache running at full processor speed, a 142MHz system bus and 512MB of DDR SDRAM.
The iBook is surprisingly roomy on the inside, with ample hard disk space for your music library, digital images and desktop movies: The 14.1-inch 1.42GHz iBook model comes with a 60GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, the 14.1-inch 1.33GHz iBook model comes with a 40GB hard drive, the 12.1-inch iBook ships with a 40GB hard drive.

 TrustedReviews - Apple iBook G4 12in
But with the G4 upgrade the iBook, in a way, causes a problem for Apple, since the iBook neatly undermines the PowerBook 12in on price/performance.
This reflects the original design criteria of the first iBooks, which were designed with the education market in mind.
The G4 iBook also brings the range in line with its PowerBook cousins by replacing the tray loading optical drive used in the G3 models with a slot loading one, situated on the right hand side.

Trollaxor > iBook G4 Lacks Velocity Engine?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
It appears that Apple's new iBook G4 lacks a Velocity Engine, and may not be using what we've known as a G4 processor at all.
The iBook G4 tech specs fail to mention the Velocity Engine at all in stark contrast to all of Apple's other G4-class products.
Perhaps the chip in question is a PowerPC 750FX, or a Motorola G4 manufactured by IBM without its Velocity Engine, or just an older Motorola G4 and a confused phone rep. At this point in time, while Apple moves away from Motorola, it seems to make little sense that they prolong dependency on the company.

Think Secret - EXCLUSIVE: Apple Planning Intel-Ready iBook Debut for January
Those behind the report of Intel-ready iBooks are the same sources responsible for past reports of the Mac mini and photo iPod, first reported by Think Secret.
Apple will almost certainly tap Intel's forthcoming Yonah processor for the iBooks, a successor to the company's Pentium M. It is unknown whether Apple will go with a dual-core version of the processor, slated for release in January, or a single-core version, which Intel announced in August would be delivered shortly after the dual-core version.
He also expressed concerned that whatever iBook models Apple introduces, the screen size might not be big enough to compete with others in the Windows world, even at less than $999.
