Topic: IC 434

  IC 434
A long, thin, moderatly bright nebulous region running north to south near Alnitak (Zeta Orionis), the eastern star of Orion's Belt.
IC 434 is better known than its Index Catalogue number might suggest: it is the bright background nebula against which the famous dark region called the Horsehead Nebula is silhouetted.
Nearby are the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) and the reflection nebula NGC 2023.

I started IC 434 in 1990 as TALES OF DOOM, using a keyboard for the first time.
IC 434 was born, named after the so-called Horsehead Nebula, a beautiful galactic cloud in the impressive constellation of Orion.
Nowadays, I'm working on new IC 434 material again (a new album is 80% ready) and do mastering and producing for a growing number of bands with the Breakdown Mastering Studio.

The Horsehead Nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark pillar of obscuring dust and non-luminous gas that blocks the light glowing behind from the diffuse emission nebula IC 434.
IC 434 was detected photographically in 1889 by E. Pickering.

Pickering detected IC 434 photographically in 1889, the Horsehead can be detected on a photo made on January 25, 1900 by Isaac Roberts (Roberts 1902).
The remarkable Horsehead is a dark globule of dust and non-luminous gas, obscuring the light coming from behind, especially the moderately bright nebula IC 434.
It is the most remarkable feature of an interesting region of diffuse nebulae, which belongs to a huge cloud of gas and dust situated 1,600 light years away in the direction of constellation Orion.

 Horsehead Nebula
The nebula is a classic dark nebula and may only be seen because it is silhouetted against the very faint glow of IC 434, a reef of tenuous emission nebulosity.
The Horsehead is believed to a dense cloud of tiny interstellar grains of dust that blocks the light of the emission nebula IC 434 and stars behind.
While dark nebula are generally invisible (except of course where back lit as in the case of the Horsehead), their dust grains very effectively absorb light and ultraviolet radiation and then re-radiate this energy at infrared wavelengths.

The nebula strip running south from Alnitak is the designated IC 434, into which the famous dark nebula called the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) protrudes from the eastern side.
A H-Beta filter is extremely helpful for detecting IC 434 because the nebula's contrast against the sky background increases a lot.
The observability of IC 434 is another indicator for detecting the Horsehead: If it just very faint in the H-Beta filter, B33 will be hard if not impossible.
