About half the IC objects were discovered visually, but much of the second IC catalog (objects numbered IC 1530 and up) consists of photographic discoveries.
By the time of the Index Catalogues it was clear that the number of "nebulae" (galaxies) was skyrocketing, which is probably why Dreyer quit cataloging and spent his later years concentrating on his other love, the history of astronomy.
Long out of print, the NGC and IC were reissued with modern coordinates in a newly edited edition by Roger W. Sinnott titled NGC 2000.0 (Sky Publishing Corp., 1988).

The Index Catalog (IC) is simply a compliment - an index - to the New General Catalog.
It is the "modern" Messier Catalog for amateur astronomers that seek deep sky delights that are both challenging and rewarding; however there are no Messier listings in the Caldwell Catalog.
An additional listing is the column "Finest NGC Object" list, a list compiled by Alan Dyer (a 'competitive' list to the Caldwell Catalog).

We report extensive radio and X-ray observations of SN 2003bg whose spectroscopic evolution shows a transition from a broad-lined Type Ic to a hydrogen-rich Type II and later to a typical hydrogen-poor Type Ibc.
We show that the extraordinarily luminous radio emission is well described by a self-absorption dominated synchrotron spectrum while the observed X-ray emission is adequately fit by Inverse Compton scattering of the optical photons off of the synchrotron emitting electrons.
