Ica Stop is a medium-size supermarket with a customer group with great purchasing power.

Every time we enter a supermarket and see a bar-code donation program connected with some other nonprofit organization, we know that the idea conceived almost 20 years ago has been picked up and utilized to generate untold millions for charitable causes.

Leading Swedish retailer ICA has reported a 2.3% decrease in sales for 2005, with turnover amounting to SEK 71,633m (7,723m euro).
ICA's operations in the Baltics have started well since the joint-venture with Kesko began in January 2005.
In 2005, ICA added eight new Maxi Stormarknad hypermarkets, four ICA Kvantum supermarkets, two ICA Supermarket stores and four ICA Nära convenience stores in Sweden.

I went to several ICA's in Stockholm and Goteborg during my last recent stay in Sweden and I can safely say that even the most well-developed, customer focused, abundant ICA store isn't even one-tenth what Tesco/ Walmart/Asda is in terms of size, choice, services and responsiveness to a changing market.

A new chemical treatment means that apples can be kept for a year - and sold in shops as if they were freshly picked yesterday.
The method, known as Smartfresh, was approved by the EU last year and supermarket chain ICA is the first in Sweden to sell apples that have been treated this way, reported Göteborgs-Posten.

 The Local - Ica plans expansion after profit rise
This was a significant increase on the same period in 2005, when the grocery firm recorded profits of 237 million kronor.
Hakon Invest, which owns 40 percent of Ica, announced profits for January to March of 263 million kronor, up from 210 last year.
"During 2006, Ica AB will invest in the future by retaining a high pace of store openings, and by further strengthening the purchasing an logistics functions, at the same time as placing emphasis on keeping prices low," Hakon's CEO Claes-Göran Sylvén wrote in his company's interim report.
