The ICFTU has three regional organisations, APRO for Asia and the Pacific, AFRO for Africa, and ORIT for the Americas.
The ICFTU also maintains close links with the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) (which includes all ICFTU European affiliates) and Global Union Federations, which link together national unions from a particular trade or industry at international level.
The ICFTU lobbies for the ratification of what it calls "core labour standards" -- the various conventions of the International Labour Organization.

The ICFTU has staff which are devoted entirely to the monitoring and defense of workers rights, and they issue -- almost on a daily basis -- alerts and calls to action.
Every June, the ICFTU publishes its "Annual Survey of Violations of Trade Union Rights" which is essential reading for those who are concerned with these issues.

Global Exchange : 30 Unionists Killed This Year Already, Says ICFTU
The ICFTU's 23 page complaint to the ILO also describes the severe repression suffered by agricultural communities at the hands of the Colombian Army and paramilitary forces associated with it or acting under its control.
The ICFTU underlines yet again that the majority of violations of trade union rights in Colombia take place in the midst of collective bargaining, strikes and other legitimate trade union activities, and not - as the government claims -a mere coincidence or side-effect of the internal armed conflict affecting the country.
The ICFTU says it is all the more concerned about this issue since many Colombian trade union leaders and activists have been similarly branded by the government over the years, and that many have been extra-judicially executed as a result.

The ICFTU represents 148 million workers worldwide and is by far the biggest confederation consisting of 234 affiliated organisations in 152 countries and territories on all five continents.
The ICFTU has a large membership in industrialised countries and can exert its weight when negotiating with multinational corporations on social issues that can only be dealt with at the international level.
The ICFTU has always heeded pluralism in the international labour movement, but it is probably true that this has been communicated more efficiently in recent years.

The ICFTU is concerned that APEC leaders are failing to include the social dimensions of growth into their policies, which remain dominated by a business-driven effort to enlarge trade and investment opportunities.
Furthermore, the ICFTU is calling upon APEC countries to respect basic workers' rights by applying the 1998 ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and recognising freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining in all economic activities, including those in Export Processing Zones.

The ICFTU will invite other international labour organizations to join a campaign to ensure that all unions throughout the world embark on international solidarity projects during the year 2000, including twinning of unions in different countries, the creation of international solidarity funds, union exchanges and other forms of solidarity action.
One of the major tasks of the ICFTU is to respond in a timely and appropriate manner on behalf of workers and their unions to ensure that increasingly influential international standards reflect a broader agenda than the narrow interests of international organizations representing business and employers.

The ICFTU states that, when the UGTC was established, it decided to request registration from the Ministry of Justice and thus recognition of its legal personality - vital for it to be able to exercise its trade union activities lawfully.
The ICFTU is also concerned by the fact that the Cuban authorities have acted in such a way as to create a climate of intimidation to undermine and interfere with the setting up of the UGTC and its recruitment activities.
The ICFTU concludes by pointing out that the situation described above proves that Cuban workers are still denied the basic right of trade union organisation and that the practice of free trade unionism is still subject to widespread repression on the part of the Government.
