  African trade unions call for checks and balances in foreign investment
The move came at the end of a three-day African trade union conference organised in Nairobi by the Brussels-based International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and its Nairobi-based African Regional Organisation.
African trade unions are also cautious about the Growth and Opportunity Bill passed by the US Congress to boost American investment in Africa.
Export processing zones, now established in 25 African countries, came under heavy criticism during the trade union meeting which also condemned the increased resort to child labour on the continent and rampant discrimination against women workers too often considered as a sources of cheap labour.

It is in recognition of the enormity and gravity of the pandemic that the ICFTU adopted a Resolution on Involving Workers in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS in the Workplace at its Congress in Durban in April 2000.
In implementation of the Durban Resolution, the African Regional Organisation of the ICFTU Convened a Pan-African Conference in Gaborone, Botswana from 27 - 29 September, 2000 whereby the African trade union leaders adopted a comprehensive declaration "The Gaborone Trade Union Declaration on Involving Workers in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS in the Workplace".
Organised workers are more likely to accept change if linked to their wages and job security; and thus through the contacts they retain within their communities they can also be able to influence other people outside the workplace.

Of great concern to trade unions is the fact that workers have had to bear the brunt of the ensuing economic dislocations, in the form of massive unemployment, as a result of lay-offs from affected enterprises, and increasing poverty.
A case in point is the African Growth Opportunity Act which passed in the US Congress earlier this year as part of a wider Trade and Development Act.
African countries are being encouraged to sign bilateral trade agreements within the framework of the Act, but the benefits to our countries are not at all clear.

 Trades Union Congress - International Development Matters April 2005 (Issue No 37)
ICFTU General Secretary Ryder said governments and employers should observe the more than 10,000 28th April activities which are being organized by the ICFTU and Global Unions in nearly 110 countries or regions across the world.
Organisers of workers' groups and protests are often arrested and sentenced to terms of imprisonment, "reform through labour" or "re-education through labour", says the ICFTU report which includes, for example, the cases of two individuals sentenced to 12 and 15 years imprisonment for posting articles on the internet in favour of creating independent trade unions.
The ICFTU supports the right of all working people to participate in May Day celebrations, and believes that the attitude of the Iranian authorities to the planned 2005 celebrations will be an important indicator of the extent to which fundamental labour rights will be respected in the country in future.

 African trade unions seek to protect workers from the ill effects of globalisation
Meeting in Nairobi for a three-day conference (March 30—April 1) organised by the ICFTU’s African Regional Organisation (AFRO), delegates attacked governments in certain African countries for their disregard of workers’ legitimate rights to form trade unions, greedy multinationals for exploiting their workforce and ill-conceived structural adjustment programmes that lack a badly-needed social dimension.
Addressing delegates, ICFTU general secretary Bill Jordan drew attention to the growing challenge posed to trade unions by the mushrooming of export processing zones which have now been established in some 25 African countries.
The conference was opened on Monday by Kenya’s President Daniel arap Moi who said that the globalisation of the world economy had reduced the autonomy of the developing countries in determining their macro-economic policies.

Kailembo arrived in Niamey on April 25, as the National Workers' Union of Niger (USTN) ended its three-day general strike, the seventh since the end of February, and was able to visit several of the detained trade unionists, 30km from the capital.
The ICFTU has approached the government several times to call for the opening of negotiations with the national trade union centre,and in a message to President Mainassara has urged that all the trade unionists arrested for going on strike be released.
The AFRO General Secretary's visit comes just before the organisation's Congress, to be held in Dakar from May 15 to 17.

The trade unionists hope that the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and its African regional organisation, AFRO, the organiser of the Casablanca conference, will support their pressure on the African governments to rethink their approach.

We further appeal to you to listen to the voice of the people and seek to resolve the crisis through peaceful means, by discussion and dialogue silencing peaceful demonstration and an ostrich approach to such a situation, is no solution at all.
