Kingston (population 600,000) is the capital of Jamaica.
It is located on the southeastern coast of the island country at harbour protected by the Palisadoes, a long sandspit which connects Port Royal and the Norman Manley International Airport to the rest of the island.
Despite the fact that the majority of the population are Blacks, Kingston, Jamaica has a large number of non-Blacks.

ICT4D or ICT For Development is comprised of both technical and non-technical personnel that are committed to the growth of ICT in Jamaica.
The conference, which saw over 200 participants attending from Jamaica and overseas, was helpful in establishing partnerships for a unified and structured approach to the development of ICT in Jamaica.

ICT4D Jamaica network in March 2004 at a ceremony attended by Minister Paulwell of the Ministry of Commerce, Science and Technology (MCST), who pledged his support for the network.
The focus for 2005, therefore, is on empowering the ICT4D Jamaica group to develop a vibrant, sustainable network that will attract political and financial support from key institutions and actors.
However, now that the Jamaica Country Programme has entered the Shared Dialogue phase, IICD’s role changed: rather than working directly with its local partners on the ground, it transferred this responsibility to the newly established ICT4D Jamaica Network, which was set up especially for this purpose.

ICT4D Jamaica is a non-profit organization, co-sponsored by the HEART Trust/NTA and the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) with a mission to foster sustainable development and global competitiveness, through research, modelling, advocacy and knowledge sharing of ICT enabled best practices.
The initiative is expected to provide a solution to the increasing number of the island's secondary school students graduating without the requisite work-related technology skills by building partnerships between the public and private sector to fund ICT programmes in schools.

 Another ICT Initiative for Education - Jamaica Information Service
The project is a private/public partnership between ICT4D Jamaica which is co-sponsored by the HEART Trust/NTA and the International Education Collaborative Foundation, a non-profit organization based in the United States.
Known as the Jamaica Collaborative for Universal Technology Education (JCUTE), the initiative is designed to integrate ICT into education at the secondary level and in so doing provide 21st Century education geared towards workforce skill development for economic competitiveness.
Acknowledging that economic competitiveness was critical to the country's survival in the global economy, the Prime Minister said it was essential that a 21st Century workforce be developed that is empowered to produce competitively as well as withstand the liberalization of its own labour market arising from the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market.

According to Jamaica's National KABP Survey in 2000, more than a third of men and women surveyed knew a person with AIDS (living or dead), and, for 10% of those surveyed, the person with AIDS was a close relative or friend.
AIDS is the leading cause of death among young adults (15-44) in both Jamaica and the region as a whole.
Many community-based organisations are working in Jamaica to address the HIV epidemic and to empower communities at risk for, or experiencing the impact of, stigma and discrimination within and outside these communities.
