ICTP’s mission is to foster the growth of advanced studies and research in physics and mathematics, especially (but not exclusively) among researchers from developing countries.
ICTP is a United Nations (UN) institution organized under a tripartite agreement among the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Government of Italy.
Pierdavide Coïsson, research scientist with the ICTP Aeronomy and Radiopropagation Laboratory (ARPL), presented an improved model for representing the behaviour of the upper part of the ionosphere at the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) 2005 workshop held in Tortosa, Spain, from 27th June to 1st July.

 Director-General pays first visit to ICTP: UNESCO
ICTP is a Category I UNESCO Centre that provides access for scientists from developing countries to state-of-the-art research activities thus helping them overcome their relative isolation.
The 2004 ICTP Prize, in honour of Arthur Taylor Winfree, was presented to Professor Bernardo Gabriel Mindlin of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for his important contributions to the fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary aspects of nonlinear dynamical systems.
The ICTP Prize was created in 1982 by the ICTP Scientific Council to recognise outstanding and original contributions of young scientists (no more than 40 years of age) from developing countries to physics and mathematics.

 Cosmologist Andrei Linde awarded 2002 Dirac Medal for theoretical physics: 09/02
In announcing the award, ICTP officials credited the three scientists with developing the concept of "inflationary cosmology" -- the idea that the universe began not with a fiery big bang but with an extraordinarily rapid expansion (inflation) of space in a vacuum-like state.
According to ICTP, "Difficulties with the original inflationary model were recognized by Guth and others, and were overcome with the introduction of 'new' inflation by Linde and Steinhardt.
Founded in 1964 by Nobel laureate Abdus Salam, the ICTP is dedicated to fostering the growth of advanced studies and research in the developing countries.

The Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Koïchiro Matsuura, will visit ICTP on Tuesday, 17 May, to participate in the 2004 ICTP Prize ceremony.
Following the ceremony, Matsuura will meet with ICTP’s director and the heads of the Centre’s scientific groups, as well as the president and executive director of TWAS, to learn more about the organizations’ activities.
ICTP and TWAS operate under the auspices of UNESCO and with funding from the Italian government.

 2003 Dirac Medal of the ICTP
ICTP made the announcement on 8 August 2003 on the occasion of the birthday of the late Nobel Prize laureate Paul A.M. Dirac, a strong supporter of and frequent visitor to ICTP.
Born and educated in the former Soviet Union, Zakharov is director and professor of physics at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in Moscow.
Launched in 1985, the Dirac Medal of the ICTP, given in honour of the one of the world's foremost physicist of the 20th century, is ICTP's highest honour.

The ICTP scientific and administrative staff made enormous efforts to put on a range of open activities, displays and events to capture the interest of partcipants.
Equally important, ICTP created a nurturing environment for the development of a constellation of institutions in Trieste, each of which is dedicated, in part, to the promotion of science and technology in the developing world.

The main former objective of ICTP, as a unique organization, was divided into a triple purpose: promoting research in physics and mathematics in developing countries, offering to scientists training to be applied later in their countries of origin and serving as an international forum for science from all over the world.
It was especially enhanced that the interest and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research in emerging areas like applied interferometry, optical physics, diffractive optics, quantum optics and atom optics applications are not restricted to the industrialized countries, but its presence is quite visible in the so-called "developing countries".
Besides, the academic and social interaction between the participants and lecturers is considered to be an extremely important aspect of the ICTP Colleges.
