The IEDR is a not-for-profit organisation and a member of CENTR, the orgainsation was spun-off from University College, Dublin in July 2000.
The IEDR have received a lot of media attention in Ireland and abroad for their unusual policies in issuing domains, which often seem to resemble jobs for the boys.
It was also found that the IEDR were often charging domain holders for 12 months in every 11, billing people a month earlier each year for the same amount.

 IEDR's inside.ie e-zine: Critic's corner
IEDR Policy is controlled by its board of directors who take input and advice from a number of sources, none of which come close to representing the best interests of the 'Irish Internet'.
The IEDR promotes the Forum as 'the main channel for ongoing discussion and debate about the Registry' yet it is not represented on the IEAG and it is highly unusual to see any official comment within the Forum from the IEDR.
The IEDR Website states that the Forum is not representative of the whole Internet Community, which is probably why groups such as RAID are more influential, but cherry picking representatives of select groups does not build a representative body.

Fagan´s tenure at IEDR Limited began with high hopes that he would drag the.ie cctld screaming and kicking from the morass of academia.
However recent decisions by IEDR to outsource the technical running of the domain to a company that had never administered a cctld and does not even administer its own DNS raised fears throughout the industry over the integrity of the.ie cctld.
It remains to be seen if IEDR Limited will be stripped of the right to run the.ie cctld registry but there is a feeling among the hosting companies that for all the pious aspirations about administering.ie for the good of the Irish internet community, these people have betrayed the national domain.

Following a lengthy battle with IE Domain Registry Ltd (IEDR) and the University College Dublin (the original owner of the registry) using the Freedom of Information Act, an appeal has finally seen the not-for-profit director-owned company ordered to release large amounts of correspondence concerning the.ie domain.
IEDR executives have, in the past, attributed this disparity to extra costs associated with running a restricted domain (i.e.

At the same time the IEDR has noted, since the 1/1/1999, the difficulties this has caused to both its clients and itself in relation to applications rejected, the documentation required to substantiate an application and the time involved for both parties in ensuring a correct application form from applicants.

IE Domain Registry Limited (IEDR), the company in charge of the.ie country code top level domain (ccTLD), has announced a radical overhaul of its rules on naming in the.ie namespace effective 5th November, 2001.
The IEDR has clarified the basis for applications grounded on registered marks by including Community Trade Marks, allowing applications on foot of registered marks regardless of whether a company is trading in Ireland or not and allowing applications on the basis of pending trade mark applications (subject to certain safeguards).
In common with many other ccTLDs, the IEDR requires the existence of a real and substantive connection with Ireland (as redefined to mean the whole island of Ireland) before it will allow registration of.ie domains.
