FireWire (also known as i.Link or IEEE 1394) is a personal computer and digital video serial bus interface standard offering high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services.
All FireWire devices are identified by an IEEE EUI-64 unique identifier (an extension of the 48-bit Ethernet MAC address format) in addition to well-known codes indicating the type of device and protocols it supports.
During the period they participated with the IEEE p1394 working group, Apple proposed licensing all of their blocking patents for $3,000, a one time fee only for "the point of first use" or the integrated circuits that implement the protocols.

 IEEE Standard 1394: Firewire
IEEE 1394 standard also supports asynchronous data transfer for devices that do not require real-time data transfer.
Some of these 1394 connections can become dedicated on the fly, so that devices which are time sensitive can maintain a connection at a constant data transfer rate (this would keep your streaming video from being jumpy and audio from becoming distorted).
1394 eliminates this by reducing the highway to one lane but allowing the cars to go as fast as possible and packing them bumper to bumper (as shown on the next page).

IEEE 1394: a high-speed, serial input/output bus for computer peripherals and consumer electronics, capable of transfer speeds of up to 400 megabits per second.
IEEE 1394 also has the advantage of being able to deliver data both asynchronously and isochronously.
While IEEE 1394 advocates are pushing for such ports on all systems, USB proponents believe the upcoming USB 2.0, with its 480-mbps transfer speed, will be the only port you need.
