  UPGRADED STANDARD BOOSTS SPEED OF IEEE 488 INSTRUMENT BUSES EIGHTFOLD
The revised standard, IEEE 488.1-2003, "Standard for Higher Performance Protocol for the Standard Digital Interface for Programmable Instrumentation," addresses the operation of the IEEE 488 bus or General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB), which has been in use for over 25 years and is built into millions of instruments worldwide.
In addition, existing IEEE 488 instruments are fully compatible with the revised standard but cannot take advantage of the higher data transfer rates.
IEEE 488 and 488.1 are trademarks of the IEEE.

In 1978 the bus was standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers as the IEEE Standard Digital Interface for Programmable Instrumentation, IEEE-488-1978 (now 488.1).
