IFPI Secretariat in London is responsible for co-ordinating international strategies in the key areas of the organisation's work - anti-piracy enforcement, technology, lobbying of governments and representation in international organisations, legal strategies, litigation and public relations.
IFPI's regional offices for Asia, the CIS countries, Europe and Latin America are responsible for implementing IFPI's strategies at regional level, co-ordinating the work of national groups and setting lobbying priorities tailored to the political environment in their regions.
IFPI's Moscow office is responsible for co-ordination and policy in Russia and the CIS countries.

It is unfortunate that IFPI did not also take up the other point raised by the arbitration board, namely that depositing a deduction for audio-carriers advertised in the media could not be upheld.
When IFPI now claims in its press release that the "phono industry signals concessions in the rates dispute", then it is twisting the facts and the legal issues: it is not a matter of making "concessions", but of ending an obviously unlawful state of affairs.

The IFPI is happy that its strategy - of going after those who make big libraries available, rather than download - is working in a 'softly softly' manner, especially as broadband - the technology it sees as assisting evil file-sharing - spreads.
The IFPI's latest assault brings it in line with the US's RIAA, which has filed more than 900 lawsuits, though it made what many saw as the strategic mistake of targeting both downloaders and "uploaders" indiscriminately, leading to bad publicity when one of the first turned out to be a 12-year-old girl.

This is the second major set of claims filed against a Russian CD plant since IFPI announced its offensive at the end of last year, targeting plants in Russia believed to be supplying the country's lucrative trade in pirate discs.
IFPI recently urged the Duma to pass the necessary amendments to the Russian copyright act without further delay and called for law enforcement to take firm and immediate action against other CD plants, based on information supplied by IFPI.
IFPI filed civil claims against the Russobit-Soft plant in December 2003.

BIEM and IFPI reportedly resumed talks in late 1997 in an effort to reach an agreement "in the best interests of the industry." By mid-December, there was consensus on the main provisions and revisions to be incorporated into the draft contract.

The anti-piracy offensives of the International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI) produced mixed results in the last year: while global sales of pirated music hit a new record of 1.1 billion discs, the rate at which physical piracy continued to spread throughout the world in 2003 slowed from previous years.
In its report, the IFPI issues a "call to governments" urging stronger, up-to-date copyright laws; stronger, deterrent-oriented sentencing of pirates; regulation of disc manufacturing; and commitment to prosecute copyright crime aggressively.
New efforts to counter piracy, the IFPI said, include the tracking of polycarbonate plastic to find the sources of pirate CD manufacturers' raw materials, much as the U.S.'s Drug Enforcement Agency follows ingredients for methamphetamine production, as well as the establishment of an Interpol "fighting fund" with contributions from the IFPI and other unnamed organizations.

The IFPI estimates that Russia's disc-replication industry is capable of producing 200 million units annually, four times the level needed to meet legitimate demand.
Reinforcing their image as allies, the NFPP and IFPI issued a jointly developed question-and-answer document, "Developing a Legitimate Music Market in Russia." The Russian market is a growth area for the music industry, with a 17% gain in sales in 2001, despite a global decline.
In other piracy news, the IFPI reported May 24 that Spain's national police had seized nearly two million blank discs that were destined for use by industrial pirates.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) says that over 200 million songs have been purchased in the US and Europe in the last 12 months.
However, the IFPI warns that music downloading is still in its infancy, with less than one in ten people downloading songs and only one person in two, in the key 16-29 age group, aware of the existence of legal ways of buying music online.
IFPI figures show that the supply of music files on unlicensed P2P services has fallen over the last year.

IFPI affiliate groups are currently campaigning against hundreds of sites in more than 20 countries worldwide that are infringing copyright laws.
The IFPI intends not only to rid the Internet of pirated content, but also to find the best way for artists and companies to deliver music legally over the Net, according to a statement.
The U.K.'s national IFPI member, the British Phonographic Industry also recently launched an investigation into illegal music, specifically targeting sites where users are promised illegal music files after looking at a so-called sponsor's Web site, which often consists of pornographic material.

According to the International Federation for the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), piracy is worst in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Latin America, with commercial piracy operations existing in each region.
IFPI cited Brazil in particular, which saw legitimate CD sales drop 25% in 2003 while sales of pirated CDs rose 9%.
While the dollar amount quoted by IFPI may be suspect a la the BSA's figures for software piracy, there is little doubt that the largest source of lost revenues for the recording industry is from commercial piracy operations.

The IFPI estimated that in May 2002, there were approximately 3 million people and 500 million files available for copying at any one time on all of the peer-to-peer services worldwide.
The IFPI said that last year it and its affiliated national groups removed from the Internet approximately 1,060 unauthorized peer-to-peer music servers, 28,000 Web and FTP (file transfer protocol) sites offering pirated music, 2.8 million people using unauthorized peer-to-peer services, and 700 million unauthorized music files in 51 countries.
The IFPI said this means that almost 40 percent of all CDs and cassettes sold around the globe are pirated copies--the highest proportion ever recorded by the organization.
