  MIT Kalam History
According to a status report of major ongoing projects of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) headed by Kalam, the development of the five indigenous missiles under the IGMDP is progressing as per schedule.
"Agni" missile, the crown of the IGMDP, is being given top priority and DRDO scientists have been able to indigenously produce carbon-carbon composite material which could withstand temperatures upto 3500 degrees celsius during the flight of the missile.
User trials of the other three missiles under the IGMDP - the 9 Km short range low level quick reaction Trishul for the three services, the 25Km medium range surface to air missile "Akash" with multiple target handling capability, the third generation 4Km range anti-tank "Nag" missile - were slated to commence next year.

The Agni missile (from Sanskrit Agnī meaning "Fire", one of the 5 elements of nature) is an IRBM developed under the IGMDP by India.
It was first tested at the Interim Test Range in Chandipur in 1989, and is capable of carrying a conventional payload of 1000 kg (2,200 lb) or a nuclear warhead.
The expertise and technology developed throught the IGMDP is also used in the new Anti ballistic missile called the Exoatmospheric interceptor system which successfully intercepted a Prithvi-II ballistic missile.

It is the experience of managing the SLV-3 project that Kalam brought to bear on the management of the IGMDP but on a much larger scale.
Besides, the IGMDP programme, being user-driven, introduced the concept of concurrent engineering in which the user agencies and the production agencies of the system being developed are part of the development process from Day One.
Akash is still to be successfully fully tested and proven, Trishul may even be scrapped because it has already become obsolete, Nag is yet to be developed and the original solid-liquid fuel version of Agni is yet to be productionised and inducted.

The last three trials were conducted in July 2006.The Trishul program began as part of the IGMDP, in 1983 under the guidance of Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.
Initially it was intended only as a technology demonstrator, which meant that work on it would have formed the basis for developing missiles of the same category.
The other programmes under IGMDP are Prithvi, Agni, Akash and Nag, of which development and trials of Prithvi and Agni are said to be completed and both have gone into production stage.

It was during this period that the major DRDO programmes - the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), the Main Battle Tank (MBT) and the IGMDP itself - witnessed their critical phases and, with the exception of the surface-to-surface missile Prithvi, none of them is close to being produced for the Services.
It is true that technology management in India has acquired a new paradigm following the IGMDP's approach to tapping talent from across the country rather than from within the confines of a given organisation.
