  Ihug takes on Telecom in landlines - New Zealand's source for business, stock market & currency news on Stuff.co.nz
Ihug said it was the "next evolution" of the company, as it and other Internet service providers looked to take advantage of the Government's decision to open Telecom's network to competitors, known as local loop unbundling.
Ihug wants to secure market share before the Government's reforms take effect, which may be up to a year away.
Ihug's home phone will be offered nationwide, even though it has targeted the main centres for its network.

On 10 March 2006, ihug and CallPlus applied to the Commission for a determination of the terms of access to the regulated bitstream service.
Telecom is required to provide ihug and CallPlus with bitstream access that has a downstream speed up to the maximum technical capacity of the DSLAM, and an upstream speed of 128kbps.

Ihug general manager Guy Nelson said no progress could be made in negotiating wholesale access to high speed plans.
That both TelstraClear and ihug have applied to the commission within the space of a few days indicated the issue of access to wholesale service is industry-wide said Nelson.

ihug, New Zealand's third biggest internet service provider, was put up for sale in July after iiNet said it had received a large number of approaches to buy the company.
It said the ihug acquisition would allow it to offer expanded services and increase its estimated 20 per cent share of the national telecommunications market, although it would remain first and foremost a mobile phone company.
Incumbent Telecom is the only full service telcoms company, but has been ordered by the Government to open its local networks to competitors to speed up the spread of fast internet services.

I thought it was a proxy issue as well, though I find it hard to believe Ihug uses a 1 week period while all other ISP's use less than 1 day.
