I passed out from IIT Bombay in 1984, and stayed in Hostel 5, which was one of the most chirpy hostels of all.
Your observations show IIT to be an extreme case of an unfortunate phenomenon that is global - adolescents and even adults retreating into a machine environment devoid of genuine human contact and stimulation - as true in IIT today as anywhere else in the world.
IIT Administration does know whether the internet access should be curtailed or it should continue as it is. The reason is that there seems to be enough support for both sides from the faculty.

If at all the IIT could be blamed, I would put that blame on the outdated course structure and even more, the increasing set of "rules".
But by the end of their IIT stay, the one very important lesson they learned from IIT would have been of time management.
Students who want to do research and good academic work in IIT realize (wrong) that they dont have a very wealthy future compared to their peers who are doing cool activities.

I lived for five years in Hostel 7, the "Lady of the Lake" hostel called because it was located next to the beautiful Powai lake.

While enlightened professors were trying to cultivate our minds with readings of A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, young men at IIT Bombay were more interested in watching Sunil Gavaskar at bat or better still, watching Kishore Kumar and Madhubala singing their duet about 5 rupees and 75 paisas.
I think that we had more than our share partly because a group of Delhiites who cleared JEE, opted for IIT Mumbai, and they all were sent to hostel 7.
There was a deep silence after the movie and it does require saying that that was the last time for such an event.
