	Student-Faculty Ratio at IITs and its (Site not responding. Last check: )
		Perhaps the easiest method to increase the relevance of IITs, and definitely the one in which IITs and their faculty will excel, is to enhance its impact on education and manpower development by dramatically increasing its education program.
		It is clear that IITs are currently not playing their due role in technology and manpower development in the country, and the cost of education at IITs is inordinately high.
		In general the current existence of IITs will have to be disturbed, which will be resisted in the name of quality, autonomy, research, etc. The only way IITs are likely to change is if it is "forced" upon them by linking the government funding to IITs to their "output".

		The statement "After all, IIT Kanpur has had an exemplary record of implementing the SC/ST reservation in a supportive and pro-active way that became a model for all IITs" is strange.
		IIT professors should take a relook at how their hiring process is managed, rather than claiming that it is not easy to find quality faculty.
		Unless IITs produce large number of undergraduate students of great quality, and a substantial numbers of them decide to stay back in India and continue their post graduate studies in IIT, the postgraduate programs cannot produce the desired effect.

	Plea to Preserve the IIT Brand and Build Complementary Brands to Serve India Petition
		The GOI should fund not just seven but many more engineering colleges in India, at least one in each state for a start, to raise their standards and to significantly increase the well-trained manpower pool of the nation, which is of national strategic interest especially in the IT/ITES and other emerging economic sectors.
		The Brand Name that IIT's hold today are a result of their intellectual capital, quality infrastructure, selective intake of students through JEE, and most of all, operational autonomy.
		Above all, the five primary IITs have managed to evolve a unique academic culture over the last fifty years and that culture will be hard to replicate at any other institution.

	IIT Foundation [ IITs move to improve gender ratio ]

	New Delhi Times - Gaurav Bhatnagar reporting from New Delhi, India: IITs ranked third best. Yeah, right.
		IIT are a name brand now, which ofcourse helps our cause, but i do not agree however that the curriculum should be less rigorous.
		IIT students (esp. those interested in research in practical sciences as opposed to theoretical sciences) will love to stay back in India to work on these research projects.
		The fact that they choose to be teahers at IIT in their youth and not in an esteemed western university acts as a stimulus for their frustration for most of their life.

	IIT News Update
		The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) need no introduction either in India or abroad, for their passouts have already made their presence felt everywhere.
		The IITs are funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and their policy matters are decided by a nodal monitoring body headed by the Minister for Human Resource Development.
		Announcing the date of the 52nd convocation of IIT Kharagpur, the chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Kharagpur, Mr Sanjeev Goenka, said that a host of research projects had been lined up for execution over the next two years.

	The making of new IITs
		The race for new IITs began even before the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced the creation of five more IITs 'by upgrading existing academic institutions that have the necessary promise and potential' at a function organised by IIT Kanpur in October 2003.
		However, due to constant pressure from different state governments (all of whom wanted an IIT in their backyard) and business leaders (who argued that the country needed more high quality engineers to feed the explosive demand from the IT and industrial sectors), the central government decided to move in the matter.
		In the present IIT race, it is widely discussed in political and academic circles that only three colleges will be upgraded: one in north (Uttar Pradesh) and two in south (Kerala and Andhra Pradesh).

		With laboratories that are getting outdated and infrastructure wearing thin, India's famed IIT system is under massive strain that can lead to its slump unless they chart a new course, warns a book.
		Quoting reports, the book says that the total strength of faculty in all the IITs in 2002-2003 (2375) was 27 per cent less than their total sanctioned strength (3263).
		Not only the IITs but a study by McKincy and Co. Forecast a nationwide shortage of faculty for the better engineering colleges to be around 50 per cent, that is, of the order of 5000 faculty members, it says.

	The march of the new IITs
		The seriousness of their march towards achieving the status of an Indian Institute of Technology can be gauged from the fact that the Union ministry of human development resources has called them for discussions for a third time in less than four months.
