Topic: IJ (bay)

IJ (bay) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IJ (sometimes shown on old maps as "Y" or "Ye") is a lake, formerly a bay, in the Dutch province of North Holland.
In historic times, the IJ (not "Ij") was a long and narrow brackish bay that connected to the Zuiderzee (itself a bay of the North Sea) and stretched from Amsterdam in the east to Velsen in the west.
The IJ bay provided Amsterdam, situated on the mouth of the bay where the Amstel stream flows into it, with access to the sea through the Zuiderzee.

IJS is a common abbreviation used in Internet slang for "I'm just sayin'...", indicating that the statement which precedes the "IJS" is merely a helpful comment of some kind, and not intended to be the last word on any particular debate.
In historic times, the IJ was a long and narrow brackish bay that connected to the Zuiderzee (itself a bay of the North Sea) and stretched from Amsterdam in the east to Velsen in the west.
By the seventeenth century, however, access to the IJ became troublesome due to sand bars across its mouth, and it was nearly impossible for seafaring vessels to reach the city.

IJ is a ligature in Dutch that is not part of the alphabet (see below) used to represent the diphthong [eɪ] or [ɛɪ].
To distinguish between the ij and the ei, a diphthong which in most dialects is pronounced identically, the ij is referred to as the 'long IJ' (lange ij) in the Dutch language, the ei as 'short IJ' (korte ei) or simply ei.
The Dutch ij is usually represented as a ligature of I and J.

I used to work at the IJ (and I still own Gannett stock), and even though reporters there have been known to grouse about Gannett's stinginess, they are decidedly anxious about what life under Singleton holds in store.
Staffers at the IJ declined to comment, and Publisher Phyllis Pfeiffer -- who earlier this month said she would be leaving the paper Sept. 29 -- did not return phone calls.
