 Viewing Japanese Prints: Iki
One aspect of Edo-period style and fashion was called 'iki' ("refinement"), a quiet sophistication or restrained chic in both appearance and behavior.
As a woman's allure embodied 'iki' only when she was available, a married woman did not typically possess 'iki', although ukiyo-e printmakers seemed to enjoy portraying married woman as such, suggesting the spark of illicit relations.
The kimono of the skilled entertainers called 'geisha' ("accomplished persons") were simpler than those worn by high-ranking courtesans and their fashions became the measure of restrained chic or 'iki' that others, including courtesans, sometimes emulated.

 Varttina, iki
The band defines the term "iki" as "the primal, eternal breath," and as Mari Kaasinen describes in her e-mail interview for Green Man Review, the word effectively captures the nakedness of the vocals on this album.
In addition, the primary songwriting responsibilities within the band necessarily had to change, and guitarist Antto Varilo has emerged as the main composer in the band, with Kaasinen writing the lion's share of the lyrics.
For the most part, the strongest tracks on iki are those which sound the least like previous incarnations of the band.

Värttinä: Iki - PopMatters Music Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
On Iki, there are now only three vocalists, but with their three-part harmonies they nonetheless convey as powerful an impact as the line up from the early 1990s.
As the liner notes say, Iki translates at "the primal, eternal breath -- the wind of a butterfly wing in motion." Although, I do not have an English translation of their songs on this album, they do indeed sound as if an Eastern wind is blowing across the reeds and through the forests.
Iki opens with a one-and-a-half-minute piece where a solo a cappella voice plaintively sings at the beginning on part one of "Syyllinen Syli" or "Faithless Arms" -- a hint of things to come in their song choices and impressive vocal style.

The Eruption of Kilauea Volcano at Kilauea Iki Crater, Nov. 14 - Dec. 20, 1959, Hawai`i
The 1959 eruption of Kilauea Iki Crater was a relatively short-lived event, but it produced some of Kilauea's most spectacular lava fountains of the 20th century and yielded a wealth of valuable data about the volcano's magma reservoir system.
Because the dimensions of the east and west craters of Kilauea Iki were known, the discharge of lava from the vent and subsequent drainback into the vent could be calculated accurately.
The lava fountain reached heights of 60-80 m by the early morning of November 17, and cinder, spatter, and pumice were falling onto the south rim of Kilauea Iki Crater, the leeward side of the vent.

Värttinä: Iki: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Iki is Värttinä's ninth studio record, and their best since that remarkable 1990 LP; it's especially welcome after a lengthy period wherein they appeared to be going for some kind of adult-contemporary crossover (most notably on 1996's underwhelming Kokko) but ended up sounding like a tart, unplugged ABBA.
The tempos have slowed a tad over the years, and the vocalists aren't dazzling you with fireworks so much as enticing with intricate harmonies and tender expression, but with that said, much of this will still get your blood moving if you let it.
Versions of "Syyllinen Syli" (from traditional verse, though Värttinä perform mostly original music now) bookend Iki, and illustrate perfectly the kind of passion the group are able to pull out of harmonies and phrasing that must be hundreds of years old.
