 RPGnet: Review of Imaro
Imaro slays Chitendu in single combat, and in turn is saved from Chitendu’s ghoulish servitors by Kitoko warriors led by their chieftain, Imaro’s grandfather, and their master of arms.
Imaro gains a formidable reputation, and enemies old and new rise up to oppose him — the kingdoms of Zandj and Azania send armies against his band, jealous rivals plot against him, and the dread sorcerers of Naama and their minions once again appear.
While Imaro is not quite as radically removed from Conan the way Elric is, nor as broodingly Byronic as Kane, he is different and distinct from his literary inspiration.

Sword & Sorcery - your resource for fiction, interviews, articles, information and more
Imaro, an African sword-and-sorcery hero, strode onto the scene in the 1970s with a series of short stories and a trio of novels at about the same time as Kane and Oron and Simon Magus and Tiana.
There are three Imaro stories that were not incorporated into the novels and did not appear in anthologies.
At that time, Imaro was history for me. A segment of the first novel was too close to the Rwanda genocide for comfort, even though I had written the Imaro novels long before that awful event.

Imaro by Charles Saunders (Trade Paperback)
This novel tells the story of Imaro’s childhood, his exile from his tribe, how he grew to manhood, and how he found and lost the love of his life.
A broad knowledge of, and passion for the history and myths of Africa fertilized Charles’ imagination and led to the creation of Imaro… a heroic fantasy character the likes of which has never been seen.
At the same time, Imaro is a metaphor for Charles’ experience as a fl man in the white world of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

jlassen: How a Night Shade Book gets a cover -- Imaro
Imaro is a heroic fantasy novel, except its based on African legends and histories, instead of fetishized western European/medieval tropes.
Of course, a cover is a way to signal to the types of readers who would enjoy this book that this is in fact a book they would enjoy.
This seemed to be a story that, despite its genre garb, would have a broader appeal, because it is a universal story, and in particular a the story of an ethnic minority.

He accepted and preached the principle "Macedonia for the Macedonians" opposing the attempts of Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece to annex the region.

These tales, mostly focused on a Conan-inspired hero named Imaro, were vivid, thrilling, complex and ethnically unique in the sword and sorcery subgenre.
The briefer works and the seminal trilogy: Imaro (1981), The Quest For Cush (1984), and The Trail Of Bohu (1985), were a breath of fresh air and an inspiration to those looking for a refreshing new take on heroic fantasy adventure, especially readers of colour.
After the Imaro trilogy was published in the early 1980s, along with a few notable and wondrous short stories such as Gimmile's Songs reprinted in the acclaimed Dark Matter anthology, you effectively disappeared from the genre scene for many years.

The Americans residing in the Balkans begin to treat the "Macedonian question" as an important, independent problem of Southeastern Europe, for the first time in the mid- 90ies of the 19th century. The reasons for this are numerous and serious.
Thus, the Americans on the Balkans are fully prepared to meet and closely follow the Macedonia-staged drama in the eve and during the 1903 Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising.
There is no document from that time, which to show that the American president and the influential politicians of the country have defended the ideals of some separate "Macedonian nation", simply because no such nation existed in 1903 in Macedonia.

The novel is set in a fantasy version of Africa called Nyumbani, and our hero the warrior Imaro struggles to come of age despite the all-seeing dark powers arrayed against him.
I read it about ten years ago, so i'm a little fuzzy on the plot, I do remeber it being a great rite of passage story as the young Imaro progressed into manhood battling dark and evil magics, and a race of African Giants.
Imaro is unabashedly a Black Conan with a flavor and vitality all his own in a richly described setting.
