I'm talking about Apple Computer's new iMac G5 desktop, which starts at $1,299 for a model with a 17-inch wide-screen display, and rises to $1,899 for a version with a massive 20-inch wide-screen display.
The iMac G5 isn't the first computer to be crammed into the back of a flat-panel display.
About the only important feature the new iMac G5 lacks is a built-in reader for memory cards used in digital cameras, PDAs and smart phones, which is becoming common in better Windows desktops.

It is possible that your iMac G5 may exhibit video or power issues that are unrelated to the component failure identified by Apple as part of this program and are not covered under this program.
If your iMac G5 is not covered under warranty or an extended service agreement, such as the AppleCare Protection Plan, repairs for other issues will be made at your expense if you request that they be made.
If your iMac G5 experiences the symptoms described above and is determined to be eligible under this program by Apple or an AASP after your Standard One Year Warranty expires, the program covers affected iMac G5 computers for up to two years from the original date of purchase.

The latest revisions of the iMac G5, that is, the third generation model and the Intel Core Duo model, seem to be wonderfully free of fan buzzing noises.
The new model iMac G5 still has a processor can that ramps up its speed when under heavy processor load - but the fan noise is just that - gentle fan noise - as it should be.
It seems that in some G5 iMac systems, this fan generates a gentle whir, but in other systems, it can be an intolerable buzz that only goes away when the system is put to sleep (and even that doesn't help in some cases).

Think Secret - Updated iMac G5, eMac systems expected in April
The iMac G5, code-named Q45 C/D, is expected to receive a speed bump to 2GHz, sources say, with other specifications remaining largely unchanged.
Sources also say the new iMac G5 will sport an updated SMU Firmware -- which will also be released to current iMac G5 users as early as this month -- although it's unclear what issues the Firmware update will address.
While sound reasoning would suggest that updated Power Mac G5 models will be announced around the same time, it's unclear whether the new systems, based on the yet-unannounced PowerPC 970GX processor, will be ready in time or whether they'll make an appearance closer to WWDC in June.

Sources told Think Secret that the new iMac design is "impressive" and "an eye catcher." The new unit will not have a display with adjustable neck as found on the current iMacs, but will feature an all-in-one design with the logic board, optical drive and other components housed on the back of the flat-panel display.
Sources have also confirmed Apple is still planning on debuting the new iMacs at a keynote address scheduled for August 31 at the Apple Expo in Paris.

Apple iMac G5 review by PC Magazine
When we first saw the previous-generation iMac, with its dome base and trick swing-arm, we thought "wow." The latest incarnation of Apple's design standard-bearer, the Apple iMac G5, is no less sublime, but a lot more subtle.
The G5 processor in the iMac G5 runs a little hotter, and the new slim shape requires a few fans in the chassis.
The iMac G5 won't match the performance of a high-end Windows PC or PowerMac dual G5 (with their higher-powered Radeon X800XT or GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics processors), but it should prove to be a capable gaming box.
